Eugene, Oregon – A spectacular opening leap in the long jump propelled Tye Hunt to a 10th-place finish in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday at Hayward Field.
Hunt had an opening jump of 7.77m to put him in strong contention to advance to the finals of the event. He was in fourth place after the first round before dropping to fifth following the second round.
The third round saw the most shakeup in the results with four jumpers moving ahead of Hunt to knock him one spot out of the extra three-attempt portion of the competition.
Hunt's finish is the second-best in school history by a YSU men's athlete. In 2017, Chad Zallow came in ninth in the 110m hurdles.
After running through on his second attempt, the fifth-year senior had a leap of 7.59m on his last attempt.
Winning the event was Florida's Malcolm Cleamons with an impressive mark of 8.04m. The overall standings did not change following the third round and only one athlete had a better mark in the final session.
YSU's Hunter Christopher is in action on Friday in the 5,000m finals. The race is set for 6:55 p.m. Pacific time/9:55 p.m. Eastern time.
