The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams had a strong first day performance at the YSU Mid-Major presented by Southwoods Health at the WATTS on Friday.
Picking up event wins for the Guins were Lauren Sheehan (weight throw elite), Melana Schumaker (women's pole vault seeded), Luke Laubacher (men's long jump), India Bailey (women's weight throw) and Esther Solarin (women's long jump).
Laubacher set a meet record and moved into the top 10 nationally with a leap of 7.78m in the final event of the marathon session. Laubacher's leap came on his last of the evening and he stood at 7.63m entering his sixth attempt.
Schumaker had her best performance of the season with a clearance of 4.05m to win the event. Placing third was Ainsley Hamsher who had a mark of 3.85m while Gabbi Selman and Kaitlyn Eger both tied for fourth at 3.75m.
Solarin took first place in the long jump with a career-best leap of 6.03m while Nia Williams-Matthews also had a career-best mark of 5.91m to finish in second place.
Sheehan had a top throw of 16.84m in the women's weight throw elite to win the event. Placing second was Krista Perry with a best throw of 16.35m and Olivia Mason came in fifth at 15.75m.
In the women's weight throw open competition, Bailey had a throw of 14.64m.
In the men's elite weight throw, Coleson Kertesz took third with a throw of 15.77m while Ryan Tetrick was fourth with a toss of 15.65m.
In the women's DMR, YSU was second with a time of 12:23.16. The Penguins also were second in the men's DMR clocking a time of 10:12.16.
The final day of the Mid-Major is set for Saturday. Events begin at 9:30 a.m.
