Homewood, Ill. – The Youngstown State women's tennis team beat Chicago State 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Center.
YSU improved to 1-1 in Horizon League play while the Cougars fell to 1-1. The Guins snapped CSU's six-match winning streak with the win.
Youngstown State won the doubles point and picked up four singles wins for the key Horizon League win.
In doubles, YSU's Julia Marko and Loreno Cedeno grabbed a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles while Chicago State won 6-3 at No. 3. The Guins' No. 1 tandem of Eliska Masarikova and Maria Oliveira won a hard-fought 7-6 (6) decision to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, YSU won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 while adding a three-set win at No. 6.
At No. 1, Masarikova won 7-5, 6-3. In action at No. 2, Marko picked up a 6-3, 7-6 victory. At No. 5, Lili Minich cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win and at No. 6, Yeseniia Ovcharova won 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Penguins wrap up their road swing on Sunday at Milwaukee. First serve against the Panthers is set for 2 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Central at River Glen Elite.
