Guins Win Six Events, Set Three Records In Two-Day Span

The Youngstown State track and field teams had a busy and successful two days at meets in Akron, Virginia and Miami, Fla.

Erin Bogard highlighted the YSU efforts by setting a school record in the pole vault on Friday at Hurricanes Alumni Invitational. Bogard cleared 4.30m in the event and ranks in the top 10 nationally in the event.

Athletes who picked up individual event wins the past two days: Hurricanes Alumni Invitational: Morgan Cole (1500m), Bogard (Pole Vault) and Dorian Chaigneau (Pole Vault). Northeast Ohio Open: Gabbi Selman (Pole Vault), Dominic Perry (Shot Put) and Valeria Young (Javelin).

Hurricanes Alumni Invitational

In Miami, Bogard, Jakari Lomax and Esther Solarin each set school records.

On Friday, Solarin jumped 6.04m in the long jump to best the previous mark of 6.02m that had stood since May 2011. She finished a strong sixth in the event. On Saturday, Lomax increased his school mark to 15.83m to finish third in the triple jump. His previous best effort was 12.74m.

Cole beat an NCAA mile champion in running a personal-best time of 4:30.86 in the 1500m.

Luke Laubacher had a strong second-place finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.83 seconds. He was the top collegiate runner in the event. He was also sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.28m.

Harry Barton placed third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.67 seconds. In the 1500m, Tobias Jones had a solid third-place time of 3:58.92.

Bogard picked up the win in the pole vault while Melana Schumaker was fifth with a clearance of 3.85m. Ainsley Hamsher also cleared 3.85m at the meet. In the men's pole vault, Chaigneau won with a mark of 5.25m while Blake Sifferlin was second at 5.10m.

In the high jump, Lonnie Harper set a personal-best with a mark of 2.07m. That moved him into the top five in school history. Also for the Guins, Mason Stephens had a 2.02m and Connor Durig had a 1.97m.

Nia Grose had a personal-best time of 11.98 seconds in the 100m.

Northeast Ohio Open

Perry won the shot put with a throw of 17.53m while Ryan Henry was fourth at 16.20m.

Young won the javelin with a throw of 37.43m while India Bailey was third with a toss of 34.28m and Vanessa Greaves was fifth at 32.84m.

In the women's discus, Molly Radcliffe was second with a throw of 46.24m and Krista Perry was fifth with a toss of 42.08m. For the men, Coleson Kertesz was fifth with a toss of 48.94m.

Selman shared the pole vault title with a mark of 3.59m.

Colonial Relays

YSU had distance athletes in action on Friday at the William & Mary Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.

In the final event of the night, Beau Gorby clocked a personal-best time of 31:40.50 while Thomas Hunyadi ran a personal-best time of 32:20.33.

In the men's 1500m, Joey Stafford posted a time of 4:06.86. In the women's 800m, Alayna Cuevas clocked a 2:21.76 to place 15th. In the women's 5000m, Alyssa Deeds finished 11th with a time of 17:43.41.
