Chicago, Ill. – Four players reached double figures in scoring as the Youngstown State men's basketball team knocked off Chicago State, 80-60, and Ethan Faulkner earned his first career coaching victory on Saturday evening at Jones Convention Center.
Fifth-year senior Nico Galette scored a game-high 20 points with nine rebounds while Juwan Maxey poured in 14 points with a team-high three 3-pointers. Fifth-year senior Ty Harper scored 12 points in his YSU debut while sophomore Gabe Dynes scored 11 points with six rebounds and tied a career high with seven blocks.
Chicago State (0-2) was led by Gabe Spinelli with 15 points while Jalen Forest added 11 points and Saxby Sunderland and Cameron Jernigan each had 10 points.
After a tightly contested first half, Youngstown State turned its three-point, 32-29, halftime advantage into 14-point lead, 47-33, after scoring 15 of the first 19 points of the second half.
A basket by Jernigan got the Cougars within two, but Harper scored six straight points on an old-fashioned three-point play and a 3-pointer to push the YSU lead to 41-33 at the 17:11 mark.
Senior EJ Farmer made pair of free throws and Maxey converted a four-point play to extend the Penguins lead to 47-33.
The Cougars trimmed the lead down to six points, 58-52, on a Spinelli layup with 9:15 left in the game. Spinelli's basket was the final bucket the Cougars made, and CSU missed its final 11 field-goal attempts.
Galette scored the next seven points on two free throws, a layup and a 3-pointer to regain a double-digit lead, 65-52, at the 6:39 mark.
Youngstown State outscored the Cougars, 48-31, in the second half, made four second-half 3-pointers and shot 75 percent (18-for-24) from the free-throw line after halftime.
Youngstown State visits Ohio State Monday, Nov. 11. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Value City Arena.
