Columbus, Ohio – The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 81-47 decision to No. 21 Ohio State on Monday evening at the Value City Arena.
Leading the way for YSU was Cris Carroll who had 10 points and seven rebounds. Gabe Dynes and Ty Harper each added nine for the Penguins.
YSU falls to 1-1 on the season while the Buckeyes are 2-0 on the campaign.
The Penguins took a quick 2-0 lead on a Dynes basket before the Buckeyes scored the next 10 points in the contest. OSU was hot from 3-point range early in the game making five of its first seven attempts at the outset.
After the initial Ohio State push, the Guins settled in and stayed within striking distance the remainder of the first half.
Down 15-6, Carroll scored on a follow basket to cut the deficit to seven. The Buckeyes scored six straight points before Galette added a bucket on a reverse layup. YSU answered another OSU bucket with a nifty fastbreak one-on-one layup by Dynes.
Down 27-14, Jason Nelson drained YSU's first 3-pointer of the contest to trim the Buckeye lead to 10 with 6:35 left in the opening half. On its next possession, Harper split a pair of free throws to make it a nine-point game. From there, Ohio State went on a 8-2 run to build a 15-point cushion.
Neither team could find much offense in the final 2:45 as Galette had two free throws and OSU's Ques Glover made a 15-footer to make the score 37-22 at half.
The Guins shot 21.9 percent from the field (7-32) and made just one 3-pointer in the first half. Ohio State shot 51.7 percent making 15-of-19 attempts and knocking down five 3-pointers.
In the second half, OSU outscored YSU by 19 points.
For the game, the Penguins shot 24 percent (14-of-59) and made three 3-pointers. YSU took 24 free throws in the contest, making 16. The Guins were credited with eight steals and four blocks.
Leading Ohio State was John Mobley Jr. and Aaron Bradshaw who each finished with 16 points. The Buckeyes had five players score in double figures and shot 55.4 percent from the field.
The Penguins return to action on Saturday when they visit Syracuse. Tipoff against the Orange at the JMA Wireless Dome is set for 1 p.m.
