Morgan Cole set a new school record in the mile run at the PSU Nittany Lion Challenge to highlight a busy Saturday for the YSU men's and women's track and field teams. YSU sent a strong group of runners to both the Nittany Lion Challenge and Kent State's Jud Logan Memorial Invitational.
PSU Nittany Lion Challenge
Cole opened the meet with a second-place finish in the mile with a school-record time of 4:51.75. The previous mark set by Samantha Hamilton (4:53.42) had stood since Feb. 1, 2014. Cole's previous top time in the event was 4:54.53 which she had last February.
In the 800m, Malena Cybak took first place with a time of 2:15.47. She won her race by almost three seconds.
In the pole vault, Ainsley Hamsher was third clearing a best mark of 3.78m. Finishing fifth was Malena Schumaker who also had a clearance of 5.78m. Placing sixth was Kaitlyn Eger with a mark of 3.63m.
For the men, Jack Vecellio won the pole vault with a mark of 5.05m. Freshman Lukas Lang had a solid effort finishing third at 4.75m.
Ryan Meadows finished second in the 3,000m with a time of 8:17.32 while Tyler Clark finished third with a time of 8:21.77.
In the 800m Conner Shingleton won his heat and earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:55.94.
Jud Logan Memorial Invitational
At the newly-refurbished track surface at the KSU Field House, YSU performed well in both the running and field events. Winning events were Tye Hunt (long jump), Daisha Decree (long jump), Luke Laubacher (60m hurdles), Madison Murry (60m hurdles) and Ryan Henry (shot put).
Murry won the hurdles with a time of 8.62 seconds while Emily Bee finished second at 8.82 seconds. In the 60m dash, Melody Harloff was third with a time of 7.68 seconds. In the 200m, Harloff was fourth with a time of 25.36 seconds and Mone Knowles was fourth clocking a time of 25.44 seconds.
Decree won the long jump with a leap of 5.55m and Micah Carey placed fourth with an effort of 5.47m. In the triple jump, Nia Williams-Mathews was third with a leap of 11.95m. In the high jump, Kalli Knoble and Rachel Jeffries tied for fifth at 1.53m.
Laubacher won the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.88 seconds taking first by 0.14 seconds. In the 60m dash, Daimere Stephens-Stewart finished third with a time of 6.83 seconds.
Hunt won the long jump with a leap of 7.68m while Stephens-Stewart had a second-place leap of 7.24m. Ryan Henry won the shot put with a personal-best effort of 17.93m. Dominic Perry had a second-place effort in the shot with a toss of 17.87m. In the high jump, Mason Stephens was second with a mark of 2.04m while Nathan Leskovac was third with an effort of 1.98m.
The Penguins are back in action on Friday when they host the YSU Collegiate Invitational presented by Southwoods Health.
