Gehm Places 17th in Discus, Earns Honorable Mention All-America Status

Austin, Texas – Youngstown State's Zach Gehm finished 17th in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday evening, earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades with his throw of 57.12 meters at the Myers Track and Soccer Stadium.

Gehm was the first Penguin ever to compete in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and he was YSU's first thrower to qualify for the national outdoor meet since 2014.

Gehm fouled on his first attempt before unleashing his throw of 57.12 meters. That was his longest distance since setting the school record on April 22 at the Jesse Owens Classic. Gehm was fourth in his flight after his second throw, and he threw the discus 56.83 meters on his final attempt.

Gehm, a senior from Harmony, Pa., was sixth after the completion of the first flight, and he needed to remain in the top nine to advance to the final round. Gehm was one place shy of earning Second-Team All-America status.

Gehm's performance on Friday wrapped up an impressive performance by Youngstown State's track and field squad on the national stage. On Wednesday evening, Dorian Chaigneau placed 12th in the discus in the men's pole vault to earn Second-Team All-America accolades. On Thursday, Erin Bogard finished 19th in the women's pole vault to post the highest finish ever by a YSU female at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Like Gehm, Bogard was an Honorable Mention All-American.
