Austin, Texas – Youngstown State's Dorian Chaigneau finished 12th in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday evening at the Myers Track and Soccer Stadium. His effort earned him Second-Team All-America honors.
His 12th-place performance is the second highest finish for a Penguin at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Only Chad Zallow, who was ninth in the 110m Hurdles in 2017 ranks higher.
Chaigneau had a YSU-personal-best height of 5.45m and was one of only 15 athletes to clear the bar at or above that height in the finals.
Chaigneau passed on 5.00m to open the event, but made easy work of 5.15m on his first try.
On his first try at 5.30m, Chaigneau missed, but had impressive height so he made the decision the pass and give 5.45m a go with just two chances to clear.
At 5.45m, he missed on his first try, but on his second and final attempt, brushed the bar, but it stayed in place to advance him to the next round in ninth place. The 5.45m height knocked out eight of the athletes competing in the event.
At 5.60m, he nearly cleared the bar on his second and third tries. On his second try, he hit the bar with his stomach and his last attempt he clipped it with his feet.
Only six athletes were able to clear 5.60m.
Tomorrow evening, Erin Bogard makes her NCAA Championships debut in the pole vault as well. The event is set for an 8:30 p.m. Eastern/7:30 p.m. Central start.
