The Youngstown State women's tennis team put forth a gritty all-around effort to pick up a 7-0 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins improve to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League with the victory while the Panthers fall to 7-11 and 1-2. YSU has now won four consecutive matches.
YSU was impressive in doubles winning the point in under 25 minutes. Moving up to No. 1, Elisa Rigazio and Eliska Masarikova earned a 6-3 win. At No. 2, Cecilia Rosas teamed up with Maria Oliveira for a 6-1 win. In that match, the duo jumped out to a 4-0 lead to seize control.
While the doubles matches went quickly, four of the singles matches went the distance and all went in favor the Guins.
YSU earned straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 5. At No. 1 singles, Rigazio locked up a 6-3, 6-4 win. At No. 5, Julia Marko cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
In the other four singles, the Guins dropped the first set in each, but rallied for victories. At No. 2, Masarikova dropped her first set 6-4, before winning the next two 6-4, 6-4. At No. 3, Rosas lost a 6-3 first set before winning the next two 6-3, 6-1. At No. 4, Moka Ito lost a 7-5 first set before winning 6-4, 6-3. And at No. 6, Line Greyling picked up the first Horizon League victory of her career with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 come-from-behind victory.
The Penguins return to action next Saturday when the visit Northern Kentucky.
