Akron, Ohio -Â The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team impressed in a double-digit victory over Akron, 18-7, at Stile Athletics Field House.
The Penguins picked up their first Mid-American Conference win of the season to improve to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. The Zips fall to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
Eight Penguins scored in the matchup while four Guins delivered hat tricks. Taylor Bumstead and Ali Korin led the Penguins with four goals a-piece while Jordan Miller and Natalie Calandra-Ryan each scored three.Â
Bumstead had a career day, scoring her first career goal all the way to being tied with Korin as the Penguins' top scorer. Miller's hat trick was her first of the season and second of her career.
Korin's six points led all scorers as she added two assists to her four-goal performance. Erin Clark also made two assists on the day while scoring a goal and leading the team with three ground balls.
Tristen Chang, Ally Garrett, and Jade Shearer each scored a goal to round out the Penguins' scoring effort. Chang led the Guins in draw controls with seven.
Mikaela Staranko impressed in the net with 15 saves on 27 Akron shots, only giving up seven goals for a career-high .682 save percentage.
Akron's scoring effort was led by Sarah Pattison and Macy Vail with two goals each.
The Guins held the Zips scoreless in the first quarter as YSU racked up an 8-0 lead.Â
Three Penguins found the back of the net in just the first two minutes of the game. Garrett struck first followed by goals by Miller and Korin to give the Guins an early 3-0 lead at the 13:04 mark of the first quarter.
Then, Calandra-Ryan scored three goals in a row for her seventh hat trick of the season to extend the Penguins' lead to 6-0 with 2:44 to play in the first quarter.
Bumstead and Chang scored goals to close out a first quarter that was all Penguins as YSU headed into the second with an 8-0 lead.
Akron scored their first goal of the game at the 13:52 mark of the second quarter before YSU went on a five-goal run by five different Penguins to continue their dominance.Â
Korin, Clark, Bumstead, Miller, and Shearer each found the back of the net before halftime to give the Guins a 12-point lead, 13-1. The Zips would get in a quick score before halftime as YSU headed to break with a 13-2 lead over Akron.
In the third quarter, the Guins scored three unanswered to take their largest lead of the game at 16-2. Scoring during the run was Bumstead, Korin, and Miller. Akron scored a quick goal at the end of the third quarter to make the score 16-3.
Bumstead answered at the start of the fourth to bring the Penguins' lead back to 14 but Akron scored four of the last five goals to make the final score, 18-7.
Youngstown State will return to action on April 8 with a MAC battle at home against Eastern Michigan. First draw is set for 1 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
