The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team defeated Eastern Michigan 17-15 on Saturday at Farmers National Bank Field to earn their second-straight Mid-American Conference victory.
The Penguins improve to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in MAC play while the Eagles fall to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Jordan Miller scored a career-high seven goals which are tied for the second-most goals in a single game in program history.
Erin Clark delivered an impressive stat line scoring five goals and making an assist for six points while also tallying seven draw controls, three ground balls, and a caused turnover.
Abby Yesko scored a career-high four points with two goals and two assists. Yesko also led the team in draw controls with eight.Â
Tristen Chang delivered three points on the day, scoring a goal and making two assists. Ali Korin and Ally Garrett also found the back of the net with a goal apiece.
Defensively, Aryss Lindsey impressed with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
In the cage, Mikaela Staranko played the majority of the game making six saves on 28 Eagles' shots. She allowed 12 goals for a .333 save percentage. Staranko grabbed three ground balls on the day.
Sydney Lawrence led Eastern Michigan's scoring effort with four goals and three assists for seven points. Mackenzie Blackwell also delivered four goals while Amber Alderman scored three/
The Penguins started strong as they opened the game with back-to-back scores. Korin fired a Chang pass into the net at the 13:48 mark to get the early score. Then Clark scored her first of five to give the Guins an early 2-0 lead.
YSU and EMU exchanged a few goals with Miller and Clark scoring for the Penguins before the Guins closed out the first quarter with two straight by Chang and Garret to take a three-point lead into the second quarter, 6-3.
The Eagles opened the second quarter with two unanswered goals to cut the Guins' lead to one, 6-5, before Youngstown Stake scored three in a row by three different Penguins: Miller, Clark, and Yesko to take a commanding lead into halftime, 9-5.
Clark struck first in the second half followed by an EMU answer before the Penguins scored three unanswered goals. In the run, Miller scored two consecutive unassisted goals while Clark found the back of the net once again to give the Penguins their largest lead of the game, 13-7, at the 8:14 mark of the third quarter. However, the Eagles scored three consecutive to close out the third to cut YSU's lead to three, 13-10 headed into the final quarter.
Miller again found the back of the net quick into the fourth for her fifth score of the day, this time on an assist from Yesko. After two Eagles' scores, Miller delivered two more of her own unassisted goals to make the score 16-12 at the 7:30 mark. That run by Miller gave her three scores in less than five minutes of play.
Yesko scored the final Penguin goal of the contest on an assist from Chang at the 4:11 mark of the fourth, YSU leading 17-12. The Eagles closed out the game with three unanswered goals to make the final score 17-15.
Youngstown State will travel to Robert Morris for their second contest against the Colonials this season. First draw is set for noon at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.
