Penguins Finish HL Play Unbeaten, Claim Regular-Season Title

The Youngstown State women's tennis team beat Oakland 5-2 on Sunday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center securing their first outright Horizon League regular-season title since 2015.

YSU improves to 9-8 overall with the victory and completes Horizon League play with a perfect 6-0 record.

The Penguins used a strong singles performance to fight off the Golden Grizzlies (5-12 and 1-5).

YSU won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in impressive fashion.

At No. 1, Elisa Rigazio won 6-0, 6-2 while at No. 6, Julia Marko picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory. In their final home matches, seniors Moka Ito and Cecilia Rosas were victorious. Rosas claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles while Ito won her contest at No. 5 by scores of 7-5, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Eliska Masarikova rebounded after dropping her first set 6-1, to win the next by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

The final match was won by Oakland at No. 2.

Oakland captured the doubles points with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. YSU had a 5-4 lead at No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.

The Guins are next in action on Saturday, April 29 in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships. That match will be played at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
