Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's tennis team beat Milwaukee 5-0 on Saturday morning in the Horizon League Championship semifinals at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Guins (10-8) won the doubles point and claimed four wins in singles to beat the Panthers (9-14) for the second straight in the postseason Michigan.
With the match indoors on Saturday, the start time was moved from 11 a.m. to 9 a.m. The early start didn't faze the Penguins as they came out swinging.
In doubles, the Guins won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a quick lead in the match. At No. 1, Elisa Rigazio and Eliska Masarikova picked up a 6-3 win and at No. 2, Cecilia Rosas and Lili Minich earned a 6-3 win as well. The other doubles contest at No. 3, was tied 4-4.
YSU jumped on the Panthers in singles winning the first set in all six matches.
The first Guin to win was Rigazio at No. 1 as she collected a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Next to pick up a victory for the Guins was Masarikova at No. 2. She earned a 6-2, 6-4 win to put YSU on the brink of another championship appearance.
Youngstown State won the match with near simultaneous wins at No. 4 by Rosas and No. 5 by Marko. Rosas picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory while Marko earned a 6-2, 6-3 to finish off the match.
YSU is appearing in the Horizon League final for the third straight year and the 10th time in program history. Since 2013, the Penguins have played in the final match on nine occasions.
