The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team will square off against Mid-American Conference leading Central Michigan on Wednesday in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
First draw is set for 1 p.m. at the Central Michigan Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Scouting Central Michigan
The Chippewas are currently 6-6 overall and remain an undefeated 4-0 in MAC play. They have earned wins over Eastern Michigan and Akron as well as the season sweep of Detroit Mercy. The Penguins have also earned victories over Eastern Michigan and Akron and are set to face Detroit Mercy on April 22. Against the Eagles, YSU earned a 21-17 victory while the Chippewas defeated them 17-11. The Penguins defeated Akron twice on the season (18-5 and 18-7) while Central Michigan earned a 21-9 victory in their sole matchup with the Zips.
During the non-conference portion of the season, both the Penguins and Chippewas faced Duquesne, Cincinnati, and Marquette. Both teams faced losses against Cincinnati and Marquette while Central Michigan was able to pick up a victory over Duquesne.
Leading the Chippewa's scoring effort are Maggie Diebold and Kelly Hoyt who each have scored 33 goals on the season. Audrey Whiteside leads the team in assists with 15 while Diebold leads in points with 40. Hoyt has tallied 51 draw controls on the season to top the Chippewas while Kelly Anderson leads the team in caused turnovers (18).
Goalkeeper Alexa Martel has recorded the majority of minutes in the cage for Central Michigan. She has a .500 save percentage making 109 saves on the season while giving up 109 goals. Martel also leads the team in ground balls with 28.
Central Michigan is ranked first in the MAC in many statistical categories including goals per game (12.64), points per game (18.91), assists per game (6.27), shots per game (28.91), shots-on-goal per game (20.73), and caused turnovers per game (8.18).
The Chippewas are the reigning 2022 MAC tournament champions. Central Michigan is under the direction of Emilia Ward who is in her first season with the team.
Penguins vs. Chippewas Series History
In the series history between Youngstown State and Central Michigan, the Chippewas own a 2-1 advantage. The Penguins split the series with CMU last season after earning their first program win over the team on April 18, 2022 by a margin of 11-10. In YSU's victory, Ali Korin led all scorers with five goals while Natalie Calandra-Ryan scored four. Earlier in the 2022 season, the Chippewas defeated YSU, 20-11.

- Defender Aryss Lindsey leads the Penguins in caused turnovers with 19 while midfielder Molly Sheridan has caused 13 to rank third on the team.
- Goalkeeper Mikaela Staranko has started all 14 games for the Penguins. She has made 111 saves on 347 shots faced while giving up 162 goals for a .407 save percentage. Staranko also leads the Penguins in ground balls with 26. Redshirt-Freshman Jacqueline Cornell has seen action in eight games this season making 39 saves while giving up 43 goals for a .476 save percentage.

The Penguins (5-9, 3-2 MAC) completed the season sweep of in-state rival Akron with an impressive 18-5 victory at Farmers National Bank Field on Saturday.
YSU's 13-point win over the Zips matches the largest margin of victory in program history.
Korin scored five goals and made an assist while Erin Clark added three goals and three assists to lead the Guins with six points apiece. Korin scored her 100th point as a Penguin in the contest. Freshman Ally Garrett also recorded a hat trick on the day with three goals.
Abby Yesko, Tristen Chang, and Jade Shearer also found the back of the net multiple times with two scores apiece. Shearer's two goals mark a career-high for the freshman. Jordan Miller also found the back of the net with a sole goal in the contest.
Also scoring points for the Penguins were Taylor Bumstead, Dany Emler, and Tyler Smith who each added an assist in the contest. This marked the first career assist for Emler and was Smith's first career point.
Alexa Beyer caused a turnover and grabbed a game-high three ground balls while Yesko led all players with nine draw controls.
Mikaela Staranko made five saves on the day while giving up five goals for a .500 save percentage. Jacqueline Cornell entered the game mid-fourth quarter making two saves and holding Akron scoreless through the final minutes of play.
Offensive Awards
Two Penguins have been named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2023: Erin Clark and Natalie Calandra-Ryan.
Calandra-Ryan earned the award on March 7 after impressive performances against Niagara and No. 3 Northwestern, scoring four goals, netting nine draw controls, and grabbing two ground balls across both games.
Clark earned this season's first Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her all-around impressive offensive performance against Butler in the Guins' season-opener, delivering a seven-point performance and scoring the game-winning goal.

YSU was selected fourth in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 31 points.
