Penguins Set Numerous Bests, Top 10s In Busy Weekend

The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams combined for five event victories at a pair of meets over the weekend. The Guins chalked up three wins, numerous personal bests and many school top 10 additions at the Bison Outdoor Classic. The Penguins had some strong throwing efforts at the Tiffin Track Carnival as well.

Bison Outdoor Classic

Dorian Chaigneau and Tye Hunt won field events while Luke Laubacher and Jahniya Bowers won on the track to pace the Penguins at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday evening, Chaigneau won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.40m. It was the second-best mark in YSU history. He was the only athlete to eclipse the 4.90m mark. Chaigneau cleared the bar at 4.80m, 5.00m, 5.20m and 5.40m.

On Saturday afternoon, Hunt had a winning leap of 7.59m on his final attempt to break a tie and win the event. Hunt had a best mark of 7.57m on the day before eclipsing that mark and earning the outright victory.

Laubacher ran a personal-best time of 14.18 seconds to win the 110m hurdles. He was victorious by 0.13 over Buffalo's Chineme Ononiwu in the top heat. Bowers won by the narrowest of margins in the 100m dash. She ran a time of 11.26 seconds to get past Divonne Franklin of California (Pa.) by just 0.01. Bowers was just shy of her school record as well by 0.01.

The Guins chalked up numerous personal bests and school top-10 performances on the track throughout the event.

In the men's 1,500m, the Guins had three personal-best performances that will reshuffle the top 10 in school history. Ryan Meadows ran a time of 3:47.52 which is third fastest while Ty Conn had a 3:51.23 and Tyler Clark had a 3:51.62 to move into the top seven.

In the women's 1,500m, Morgan Cole and Malena Cybak each posted personal-best efforts. Cole ran a time of 4:32.42 while Cybak's 4:37.92 moves her into sixth place in school history.

In the 10,000m, Luke Baun ran the 10th-best time in school history in the event with a personal-best time of 3:16.63.

Emily Bee had a strong performance in both hurdle events to move into YSU's top 10 list. In the 100m hurdles she finished third with a personal-best time of 14.34 seconds. Later in the day she clocked a time of 1:03.84 in the 400m hurdles.

Harry Barton had a career-best effort in the 400m hurdles. He finished fifth with a time of 53.59 seconds which ranks sixth in school history.

In the women's 400m, Liana Rodriguez ran a personal-best time of 56.99 seconds. In the men's 400m, freshman Nate Lewins posted a personal-best time of 48.73 seconds.

In the men's 800m, Trenton Shutters posted a personal-best time of 1:53.72 which ranked eighth in school history. For the women, Malena Cybak ran a personal-best 2:13.57 which moved her into third place in YSU history in the event.

In the women's 4x100m relay, the Penguins finished second behind Penn State. YSU ran the relay in a time of 45.70 seconds to place just behind the Nittany Lions.

In the men's 4x100m, the Penguins won their heat with a time of 41.47 seconds and place fifth overall.

In the men's 5,000m, Keegan Barnette had a personal-best time of 14:47.54. In women's 5,000m, Molly Hopple had a personal-best effort by 21 seconds with a time of 18:21.95.

In the women's triple jump, the Guins secured second and fourth-place finishes. Finishing as the runner up was Nia Williams-Matthews with a leap of 12.27m while Esther Solarin was fourth at 12.11m.

In the triple jump, Jakari Lomax finished second with a best leap of 15.22m. In the javelin, Weston McLain was sixth with a toss of 63.93m while Noah Drudy made his season debut with a throw of 56.90m. In the women's pole vault, Erin Bogard, Gabbi Selman and Melana Schumaker all cleared 3.65m. In the men's high jump, Nathan Leskovac cleared the bar at 1.98 to finish sixth. In the pole vault, Blake Sifferlin finished fourth clearing 4.75m.

Tiffin Track Carnival

The men's and women's throwers who competed at the Tiffin Track Carnival all had solid showings at the Paradiso Athletic Complex on Friday and Saturday.

In the men's elite discus, the Guins had three of the top six finishers. Gehm won the event with a throw of 56.37m, Zach Gray was fifth with a toss of 49.32m and Coleson Kertesz was sixth at 48.26m. In the men's discus, Ryan Henry took first place with a heave of 47.09m.

In the men's elite shot put, Dominic Perry was second with a throw of 17.75m while Henry was fourth at 17.54m. In the men's elite hammer, Gehm had a throw of 53.98m to finish sixth. He had a best effort of 15.82m in the shot put.

Molly Radcliffe finished second in the women's elite hammer throw with a time of 43.93m. In the women's elite shot put Radcliffe was sixth with a throw of 13.45m while Lauren Sheehan was just behind in seventh with a 13.37m.

In the women's elite hammer throw, Radcilffe had a best throw of 49.77m. In the women's hammer, Krista Perry had a throw of 47.02m and in the discus, she had a throw of 39.05m.
