Box Score Crestview Heights, Ky. – The Youngstown State men's tennis team beat Northern Kentucky 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Five Seasons Sports Club.
The Penguins improve to 11-10 overall and 5-2 in Horizon League play while NKU drops to 11-10 and 3-4. The Guins close out the regular season next Saturday against Cleveland State at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Following today's victory, YSU has clinched a spot in the Horizon League Championships which start on April 28 at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Less than 24 hours after suffering a tough defeat at IUPUI, the Guins showed their moxie in sweeping the season series from the Norse, both by 4-3 decisions.
The Guins won a huge doubles point with a pair of 7-6 victories. At No. 1, Clement Mainguy and Nathan Favier won their contest 7-6 (5) while at No. 3, Laurentiu Mandocescu and Harry Fouzas won 7-6 (6) after the Norse won 6-4 at No. 2.
In singles, Mainguy won at No. 3, Fouzas won at No. 4 and Pla won at No. 5. At No. 3, Mainguy picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory. At No. 4, Fouzas won a 6-2, 7-6 (5) decision. At No. 5, Pla won 7-6 (3), 6-3.
NKU won in straight sets at No. 6 and won points in three sets at No. 1 and No. 2.
