The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field was busy competing all over the United States to open their outdoor season to conclude March and begin April.
It was a successful four days for the Guins who had long travel and battled the elements to set three school records and numerous top individual performances.
Setting school records were Nia Williams-Matthews (triple jump), Weston McLain (javelin) and Wyatt Lefker (pole vault). All three marks were set in Texas with two coming on Saturday.
Lefker opened his outdoor season pushing his pole vault record to 5.51m on Saturday at the Texas Relays. Entering the meet, Lefker held the YSU mark of 5.29m which he set at the Mideast Regionals last May. At Texas, he cleared 5.31m on his second attempt to break his previous mark. He passed at 5.41m and on his first attempt, was able to eclipse the 5.51m mark.
McLain uncorked a throw of 66.99m to break the YSU record by 0.01m. The previous mark of 66.98m was set by Jake Wilson in May 2019. McLain's previous-best effort was 58.50m set last March.
Williams-Matthews broke a long-standing record in the triple with a leap of 12.54m. Her previous best effort was 12.10m before she had a record leap on Saturday. The school record had stood since April 2011 which was set by Alisha Anthony.
Slippery Rock Dave Labor Invitational
- Coleson Kertesz won the discus with a throw of 48.61m. That mark ranks ninth in school history.
- Malena Schumaker shared the pole vault title clearing a height of 3.90m, which . Gabbi Selman earned a fifth-place finish with a mark of 3.40m. Schumaker's clearance moves her into second-place all-time in her first meet.
- In the javelin, Valeria Young was sixth with a throw of 34.16m.
- In the 1,500m run, Michael Formica was 10th with a time of 4:05.47.
William and Mary Colonial Relays Highlights
- Carly Hall ran a career-best 4:40.55 in the 1500m to finish 10th. The seventh-fastest in school history.
- Mackenzie Scott clocked a 18:03.69 in the 5,000m run while Ashley Ventimiglia posted a career-best time of 18:04.05.
- Riley Jackson ran a time of 3:56.60 in the 1500m.
- In the men's 5,000m run, Thomas Caputo finished in fourth place with a time of 14:46.58. It was a personal-best time for Caputo.
- In the men's steeplechase, Keegan Barnette placed fourth with a time of 9:11.78. That time was a personal-best and ranks seventh in school history.
Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays
- Lefker finished sixth in the event following his school-record mark of 5.51m. He finished in a tie with BYU's Caleb Witsken and unattached athlete Zach McWhorter.
- Zach Gehm finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 56.51m. The mark came on his final throw and moved him up in the standings from 10th.
- Tye Hunt was 12th in the long jump with a leap of 7.41m. Each athlete had four attempts and Hunt reached the mark on his final jump.
- In the triple jump, Jakari Lomax placed 10th with a best leap of 15.35m.
- On the track, top times for the Guins were Teddi Kinsey (14.92 seconds in the 100m hurdles), Nia Grose (12.08 seconds in the 100m) and Dom Data (10.82 seconds in the 100m).
Bobcat Invitational
- McLain placed fourth in the javelin with his school-record throw of 66.99m. On his fifth attempt he broke the record. He had thrown more than 65.84m in three of his attempts.
- In the pole vault (Section B), Blake Sifferlin became the second Penguin to clear 5.00m in the event when he eclipsed 5.00m. He now ranks second in the pole vault.
- In the women's shot put (Section B), Lauren Sheehan was sixth with a throw of 13.31m.
- In the women's javelin, Addi Watts finished second with a throw of 46.05m. In her YSU debut, Watts had the second-best effort in school history in the event behind Jessica Parham.
- Also in the javelin, Olivia Jones had a throw of 40.75m.
- In the high jump, Terron Taylor cleared the bar at 1.97m.
- Andrew Frank won the long jump (Section B) with a leap of 7.21m. Frank's effort moves him up to seven-best in school history.
- In the long jump (Section A), Tye Hunt was 12th with a leap of 7.22m.
- In the discus throw, Zach Gehm was 12th with a throw of 53.75m.
- In the shot put, Dominic Perry had a toss of 15.93m while Ryan Henry had a best throw of 15.40m.
