Penguins Host Gardner-Webb in Return to WATTS on Tuesday Afternoon

The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team will return home to face Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, March 14 in the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
The matchup, previously scheduled to take place on Farmers National Bank Field, will now take place inside the WATTS. First draw against the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m. The contest will be streamed on the YSUsports YouTube Channel.
Scouting Gardner-Webb
The Runnin' Bulldogs are currently 1-6 overall, earning their first win of the season against Mid-American Conference member Akron on Sunday, 18-10. They have lost to Cincinnati, No. 11 Duke, Clemson, Queens of Charlotte, Davidson, and Robert Morris. MAC member Robert Morris defeated Gardner-Webb 14-8 on Wednesday.
The Penguins and Runnin' Bulldogs both faced off against Cincinnati this season. Gardner-Webb was dealt a 20-9 defeat while YSU lost 14-11.
Brittany Sherrod has led Gardner-Webb's scoring efforts so far this season, scoring 12 goals. Sherrod also leads the team in draw controls with 21. Bria Foley has also reached double-digit goals with 10 this season.
Gardner-Webb is under the direction of interim head coach Maddie Martin. Martin is in her first season with the Runnin' Bulldogs after being named an assistant in July 2022 before being promoted to interim head coach in October 2022. Martin was a member of the Gardner-Webb women's lacrosse team from 2018-22.
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the 2022 season with a 10-9 overall record and competed in the Big South semifinals.
By the Numbers
- Natalie Calandra-Ryan enters the contest leading the Penguins in goals scored (20), points (27), and draw controls (37). She is also second on the team in assists (7) and caused turnovers (7).
- Sydney Bumstead and Erin Clark have also scored in double digits for the Penguins with 10 goals apiece. Clark also leads the team in assists with eight and has netted a second-best 18 draw controls.
- Ally Garrett (7), Ali Korin (7), Jordan Miller (5), Abby Yesko (3), Molly Sheridan (2), and Shannyn Cullen (2) have also found the back of the net multiple times in 2023.
- Defender Aryss Lindsey leads the team in caused turnovers, forcing 12 on the season.
- Goalkeeper Mikaela Staranko has started all six games for the Penguins in 2023 making 56 saves on 185 shots-faced and giving up 94 goals for a .373 save percentage.
- Redshirt-freshman goalie Jacqueline Cornell made her first collegiate appearance against No. 3 Northwestern, recording nine saves on 28 shots for a .391 save percentage in 52:24 minutes of play.
Offensive Awards
Two Penguins have been named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2023: Erin Clark and Natalie Calandra-Ryan.
Calandra-Ryan earned the award on March 7 after impressive performances against Niagara and No. 3 Northwestern, scoring four goals, netting nine draw controls, and grabbing two ground balls across both games.
Clark earned this season's first Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her all-around impressive offensive performance against Butler in the Guins' season-opener, delivering a seven-point performance and scoring the game-winning goal.
Last Time Out
The Penguins faced No. 3 Northwestern on Sunday, March 5 and were defeated 24-3.
Jordan Miller, Natalie Calandra-Ryan, and freshman Dany Emler each scored goals for the Guins, this being the first for Emler. Molly Sheridan and Ali Korin each recorded an assist.
Calandra-Ryan led all players with five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
The Penguins held Northwestern to just two goals in the final quarter of play.
Redshirt-freshman Jacqueline Cornell came into the game midway through the first quarter and recorded nine saves while giving up 14 goals for a .391 save percentage in her collegiate debut.

YSU was selected fourth in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 31 points.
