The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team will conclude its February homestand in the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) with games on Wednesday and Friday against Cincinnati and Duquesne, respectively. First Draw is set for 4 p.m. on both days.
About Cincinnati
Wednesday's game against Cincinnati will mark YSU's first meeting with the team. The Bearcats are 3-1 this season and most recently lost to Marquette, 19-13, on Sunday. Two of Cincinnati's wins are over YSU's Mid-American Conference foes, Kent State and Robert Morris. The Bearcats defeated Kent State, 14-7, and Robert Morris, 24-9.
Freshman attacker Camryn Callaghan has led the Bearcats' scoring effort this season with 21 goals across four games. Callaghan also leads the team in points (28) and is tied for first in assists (7). Starting goalkeeper, Ashley Lapp, has a .392 save percentage with 20 saves on the season and 31 goals against.
About Duquesne
The Penguins and Dukes faced off in 2022 where YSU was defeated 19-15 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Duquesne is coming off an overtime loss, 16-15, to the Penguins' MAC foe, Kent State, and are 0-2 to start the 2023 season.
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw leads Duquesne in goals scored with six. Rodriquez-Shaw has also netted 13 draw controls across the team's two games. Mady Piersielak and Rachel O'Toole have exchanged starts in the net. Piersielak has a .385 save percentage with 10 saves and 16 goals against, while O'Toole has a save percentage of .333 on eight saves and 16 goals against.
By the Numbers
- Natalie Calandra-Ryan leads the Penguins in goals scored (8), points (12), and caused turnovers (5). She is also second on the team in assists with four.
- Freshman Ally Garrett is second on the team in goals scored with six on just six total shots and is tied for second in points with eight.
- Erin Clark leads the Penguins in assists with five and is tied for second in points with eight. Clark has also scored three goals for YSU this season.
- Sydney Bumstead (5), Ali Korin (3), and Molly Sheridan (2) have also scored goals for the Penguins across the team's first two games.
- Mikaela Staranko has started both games in the net, logging 23 saves with 36 against for a .390 save percentage.
Last Time Out
The Guins hosted Marquette on Friday, Feb. 17, and were defeated 18-11, giving the Penguins a 1-1 record to start the 2023 season.
YSU outscored the Golden Eagles 6-2 in the fourth quarter but was unable to mount a comeback.
Freshman Ally Garrett led the Penguins' scoring effort with four goals on just four total shots. Natalie Calandra-Ryan netted a team-high six points on three goals and three assists for her second hat-trick of the season. Calandra-Ryan also caused three turnovers and grabbed three ground balls for an impressive all-around performance.
Sydney Bumstead also had a multi-goal outing with two on the day. Ali Korin and Molly Sheridan combined for the Penguins' remaining two goals with one apiece.
Defensively, Mikaela Staranko tallied 15 saves on 43 Butler shots and only gave up two scores in the final quarter.
Penguins Picked Fourth
YSU was selected fourth in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 31 points.
