Bowling Wins Two Game Sevens to Finish Fifth at Northeast Classic

Deptford, N.J. – The Youngstown State bowling team went the distance for two victories in bracket play on Sunday and finished fifth among 33 teams at the Northeast Classic. The tournament, which was YSU's first competition of the spring semester, was hosted by Sacred Heart at Bowlero Deptford.
Youngstown State was seeded sixth in the bracket after 10 games of qualifying over Friday and Saturday, and the Penguins went 2-1 in their matches on Sunday. That allowed them to move up one spot in the final standings and earn their fifth top-six finish of the 2022-23 season.
"We did a great job today navigating the ups and downs and came together as a unit as the day progressed," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We also gained valuable experience bowling two tough game sevens. I'm very proud of the group and can't wait to get back after it on Tuesday."
Youngstown State dropped its opening match to No. 11 Maryville in five games, but it bounced back to win the next two matches in seven games. The Penguins took a 3-0 lead in their match with sixth-ranked Arkansas State, and they held on once the Red Wolves won the next three games to even the contest. YSU struck seven times in game seven and was clean into the 10th frame in a 235-195 win.
In a rematch with the 11th-ranked Jennies, YSU won games two, four and five while Maryville took the first, third and sixth games to force another game seven. Neither team opened in the high-scoring game, and a turkey in the fourth through sixth frames from Jade Cote, Kirsten Moore and Lyndsay Ennis proved to be the difference for YSU. Moore picked up the 10-pin in the 10th frame to lock up the win as the Penguins took game seven 226-216.
Nebraska went 3-0 on Sunday to win the tournament title, and Vanderbilt finished as the runners-up. Stephen F. Austin placed third, and McKendree was fourth ahead of YSU. The field featured 22 of the top 25 teams in the country, and the seventh-ranked Penguins finished ahead of No. 2 North Carolina A&T and No. 6 Arkansas State.
Youngstown State will continue its spring schedule next weekend with a trip to Arlington, Texas, for the PVAMU Invitational. The three-day tournament at the International Training & Resource Center will begin on Friday at 12:15 p.m. Eastern on Friday.
