Mason Places 11th as YSU Finishes Florida Trip
Orlando, Fla. — Youngstown State concluded its second tournament of the 2026-27 season on Sunday by finishing eighth in a field of 23 teams at Destination Florida, held over three days at Boardwalk Bowl.
The Penguins finished 9-4 overall in head-to-head matches at the event, which included a 1-2 mark on Sunday.
"There are lots of positives to take away from our time in Orlando and lots of things to work on," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "We must stay focused on getting better and better with our process. If we do that and keep making progress, I like our chances to go on a solid run in the coming months."
Youngstown State was 8-2 through the first 10 matches of qualifying, and the Penguins opened Sunday by firing a set of 1,123 in a win over Southern to conclude qualifying. That was their highest set of the event, and they qualified seventh in the bracket.
Youngstown State endured two seven-game grinds in the best-of-seven Baker format for the bracket, falling to No. 10 Sacred Heart and No. 4 Arkansas State.
The Penguins trailed Sacred Heart, who served as the tournament's host, 3-2 before shooting 246 for their best game of the bracket to extend the match to game seven. Sacred Heart won 208-194 in the tiebreaker. YSU trailed Arkansas State 3-1 before winning 177-175 and 211-198 in games five and six, and the Red Wolves won 194-174 in game seven.
The individual standings continued into Sunday with a sixth traditional match to finish qualifying, and sophomore Amber Mason placed a team-high 11th with a 1,333 set. She missed the all-tournament team by one pin, and her total was the second-best six-game set in program history. Two more Penguins finished in the top 20, with Kara Beissel placing 18th with a 1,298 set and Elizabeth Teuber finishing 19th with a 1,289 total.
Youngstown State's final tournament of the fall semester will be FDU's Jersey Jamboree on Nov. 20-22.
