Bowling Wins Twice, Sits Sixth at PVAMU Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team beat No. 2 North Carolina A&T as part of a two-win afternoon on the first day of the Prairie View A&M Invitational on Friday. The three-day tournament is being held at The International Training & Resource Center.
The Penguins went 2-3 in their head-to-head matches against a loaded field at the tournament. YSU faced four of the top five teams in the December National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
The Penguins totaled 4,946 pins over their five matches for an average of game score of 197.8. That was the sixth-highest total in the field of 12 teams.
"I'm very proud of our effort. The ladies reached new heights in their togetherness on Sunday last weekend and they carried the positive momentum into today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "The goal is to make that championship bracket on Sunday and give ourselves and chance, and I believe with another solid day tomorrow, we can put ourselves in position."
Youngstown State began the day with a 1,018-992 victory over No. 14 Fairleigh Dickinson, and a five-pin loss to No. 3 Vanderbilt followed (938-933). The Penguins then fell 1,014-990 to No. 5 Stephen F. Austin before posting their highest Baker set of the season in the victory over North Carolina A&T. YSU fired games of 215, 244, 192, 255 and 189 in its 140-pin victory over the Aggies (1,095-955). YSU dropped its final match 956-910 to No. 1 McKendree.
Youngstown State will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday as the Prairie View A&M Invitational continues. The Penguins will take on No. 15 Mount St. Mary's, No. 8 Sam Houston, PVAMU, No. 6 Arkansas State and No. 9 Louisiana Tech beginning at 10:25 a.m. ET.
