The Youngstown State baseball team's 2022 season featured a number of memorable wins as well as various team and individual accomplishments.
The Penguins played 57 games across 13 different states from mid-February to late May. This past season marked just the second time in school history and the first time since 2013 that YSU played 57 games in a season. Highlights and key accomplishments from
Dan Bertolini's sixth season as head coach are detailed below.
Another 20-Win Season, Power Five Wins
- Youngstown State went 21-36 in 2022 to achieve back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2005-06. The Penguins went 32-24 in 2021 to reach the 30-win plateau for just the second time in program history and for the first time since going 37-17 in 1995. Before 2021, YSU had not reached the 20-win plateau since 2010.
- The Penguins have also won at least 10 Horizon League games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09. Youngstown State went 12-16 in Horizon League play in 2022 after posting a 24-16 league record in 2021. YSU's 24 victories in 2021 set new program records for Horizon League and conference wins.
- YSU won 13 road games for the second straight season in 2022. The 2021 campaign marked the first season since 2010 in which the Penguins won at least 10 road contests. YSU's 13 road wins are the most since the 2006 team won 14 road contests. The Penguins have earned double-digit road wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2006-07. Youngstown State played its first 28 games of the 2022 season away from home.
- The Penguins earned a pair of road wins over Power Five opponents in 2022. YSU defeated ACC member Pitt 5-2 on March 16 before beating Big Ten member Penn State 2-1 on March 22. The win against Penn State marked YSU's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 1996. The Penguins also took Big Ten member Ohio State to extra innings on April 5 before falling 5-4.
- Youngstown State has won four of its last six meetings against Pitt dating back to the 2019 season. The Penguins now have five wins over ACC opponents in the last six seasons and eight wins over Power Five opponents in the last seven seasons.
- Youngstown State placed third in the 2022 Horizon League Baseball Championship, which was its best finish since winning the tournament in 2014. The Penguins also won multiple games in the tournament for the first time since that championship season eight years ago. YSU was victorious in a pair of elimination games this postseason, beating Purdue Fort Wayne 6-0 in the opening round and Northern Kentucky 11-7 two days later. Both of YSU's losses were by two runs to second-seeded Oakland, which was the tournament runner-up.
Brosky Named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year
- Junior right-hander Matt Brosky was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Year in 2022 after his first season as a starter. Brosky became the fifth player in school history to be named a conference Pitcher of the Year, joining Collin Floyd (2021), Aaron Swenson (2008), Justin Thomas (2005) and Brad Hennessey (2001). Brosky also joined Floyd as just the second YSU pitcher since 2009 to be named First-Team All-Horizon League.
- Brosky finished the 2022 season with a 6-7 record, a 2.65 ERA, 102 strikeouts, 22 walks, five complete games and a .231 opponent batting average in 98.2 innings pitched over 15 starts. He led the Horizon League in ERA and innings pitched while tying for the league lead in strikeouts. He tied for the league lead with six victories and he ranked second in opponent batting average. The junior also paced the league and ranked second in the nation in complete games.
- Brosky's 102 strikeouts rank as the fourth most in a season in program history. He became just the fourth player in school history to record at least 100 strikeouts in a season. Brosky's 98.2 innings pitched rank as the fifth most in a season in program history, and his 2.65 ERA is the ninth-lowest single-season mark in school history. He matched the single-season school record of 15 starts, becoming just the second Penguin since 2013 to start 15 games in a campaign.
- Brosky was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team after matching his career high with 10 strikeouts in a complete game shutout in YSU's 6-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on May 25. He became the first Penguin to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team since 2014. Brosky became the first Penguin to pitch a shutout in the Horizon League Baseball Championship, and he joined Jeremy Quinlan (2014) and Corey Ohalek (2002) as the only YSU pitchers to toss a complete game in the tournament. Brosky also tied Phil Klein's 10-strikeout effort in 2011 for the most strikeouts in a game by a Penguin in the Horizon League's tournament.
- Following the season, Brosky was named to the ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team. The Penguins have now at least one player garner all-region honors in each of the last two seasons.
- On July 18, Brosky was selected by the Texas Rangers with the 229th overall pick in the eighth round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft. Brosky became the first Penguin to be selected in the MLB Draft since Frank Califano was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2015. The Strongsville, Ohio, native is the first YSU pitcher to be drafted since Phil Klein was also selected by the Rangers in 2011.
- Brosky became just the fifth player in YSU history to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. He is the program's highest draft pick since Drew Dosch was selected in the seventh round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013. Prior to Dosch's selection, the Penguins had not had a player go in the first 10 rounds since Justin Thomas was taken in the fourth round in 2005.
O'Shaughnessy Named First-Team All-Horizon League
- Junior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy was named First-Team All-Horizon League after being one of the league's top-producing hitters throughout the 2022 season. The Poland, Ohio, native led the Penguins with a .357 batting average, 79 hits, 16 doubles, seven home runs, 41 RBIs, 36 runs scored, a .543 slugging percentage, a .434 on-base percentage, a .977 OPS, 120 total bases and 221 at bats.
- O'Shaughnessy finished the season ranking second in the Horizon League in batting average and hits, fourth in at bats, tied for fourth in doubles, fifth in OPS, seventh in on-base percentage, ninth in slugging percentage and ninth in RBIs.
- O'Shaughnessy matched career highs with four hits and three RBIs in YSU's 12-6 win in the series finale on March 20 at Purdue Fort Wayne. The Poland, Ohio, native finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. The junior hit safely in 10 straight games from April 9 to April 24. He put together another 10-game hitting streak from May 8 to May 25.
- O'Shaughnessy led the Penguins with 23 multi-hit games and 10 games with multiple RBIs. The junior reached base safely in 18 consecutive games at one point.
- O'Shaughnessy was the only Penguin to start all 57 games in 2022. He set new single-season school records for games played and games started while making 45 starts at second base and 12 at third base.
- O'Shaughnessy's 79 hits are tied for the sixth most in a season in program history. He is the first Penguin since Drew Dosch in 2012 to record at least 79 hits in a campaign. O'Shaughnessy is also the first Penguin since Jeremy Banks in 2012 to record at least 16 doubles in a season.
- O'Shaughnessy was named to Perfect Game's 2022 Horizon League Preseason All-Conference Team after batting .297 and slugging .378 with one double, one triple, one home run and 12 RBIs over 30 games played and 17 starts in 2021.
Penguins Claim Weekly Awards
- Senior right-hander Jon Snyder was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on March 21 for his stellar performance in YSU's 4-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on March 18. In addition, Snyder was named the Horizon League Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 22. It marked the second time in his career that Snyder earned Pitcher-of-the-Week honors.
- Snyder allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high 10 batters over 6.1 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. The Springboro, Ohio, native did not allow a hit until a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning. He retired the first six batters he faced and he faced the minimum in each of the first five frames. He retired the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings. Snyder recorded a strikeout in six different innings, and he had multiple punch outs in four different frames.
- Snyder finished the 2022 season with 53 strikeouts and a .205 opponent batting average in 47.2 innings over 13 appearances and 10 starts. He was named the Horizon League Preseason Pitcher of the Year by Perfect Game before the season after earning Second-Team All-Horizon League honors in 2021.
- Sophomore infielder Seth Lucero was named Horizon League Batter of the Week on March 22 after batting .500 and slugging .850 with 10 hits in 20 at bats over four games played at Pitt and Purdue Fort Wayne. He recorded two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. He also registered six runs scored, 17 total bases, a .500 on-base percentage and two stolen bases in two attempts.
- Senior catcher Dylan Swarmer was named Horizon League Batter of the Week on May 17. Swarmer batted .385 and slugged 1.077 with five hits including three home runs and six RBIs in 13 at bats over four games played. The senior catcher also recorded three runs scored, one walk, 14 total bases and a .467 on-base percentage.
- Swarmer went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in YSU's 5-3 win in game one of a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on May 15. It marked the second time in his career and the first time since 2019 that he hit two homers in a game. Swarmer finished the season ranking second on the team with a .284 batting average and a .385 on-base percentage. He also led the Horizon League with 26 runners caught stealing behind the plate.
Coles, Nasonti Reach Milestones
- Fifth-year senior right-hander Chad Coles finished his YSU career with 100 appearances on the mound. Coles' 100 career appearances rank second in program history. He became just the second pitcher in school history to record at least 90 career appearances. Coles' former teammate Joel Hake (2016-21) holds the YSU career record for appearances with 115. The North Huntingdon, Pa., native made 82 relief appearances and 18 starts over his five seasons as a Penguin.
- Coles made at least 21 appearances in four of his five seasons as a Penguin. He made eight appearances over 14 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. He had 21 appearances and two starts as a freshman in 2018, and he made 22 appearances and six starts as a sophomore in 2019. Coles ranked second on the team with 23 appearances in 2021.
- Coles ranked second on the team with a career-high 26 appearances in 2022. He finished with a 4-5 record, a 5.26 ERA, one save, a career-high 70 strikeouts and a .237 opponent batting average in 77 innings pitched over 16 relief appearances and 10 starts. Coles finished the season ranking third in the Horizon League in opponent batting average, seventh in strikeouts, seventh in innings pitched and ninth in ERA.
- Fifth-year senior outfielder Lucas Nasonti finished his career with 218 games played to tie Justin Banks' school record that was set from 2003-06. The Warren, Ohio, native is just the 10th player in school history to play in at least 200 career games. Nasonti also ranks tied for second in program history with 207 career games started. He became just the sixth player in school history to start at least 200 games.
- Nasonti was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2018 after playing in 42 games and making 33 starts. As a sophomore in 2019, he played in 51 games, making 50 starts in center field. He started all 14 games in center field during the shortened 2020 campaign. In 2021, Nasonti tied the single-season school record of 56 games played and made 55 starts in center field. He started 55 of YSU's 57 games in center field in 2022.
- Nasonti led the Penguins with nine stolen bases, three triples and seven sacrifice bunts while ranking second on the squad with 54 hits and 12 doubles this past season. He reached base safely in 14 consecutive games at one point while hitting safely in 16 of his final 17 games. Nasonti put together a 10-game hitting streak from April 24 to May 15.
- Nasonti finished his career ranking third in program history with 26 career sacrifice bunts and ninth with 40 career stolen bases. Impressively, Nasonti did not commit an error in 265 chances in center field over the past two seasons. He committed a total of just six errors in 535 chances in the outfield during his five-year career for a fielding percentage of .989.
D'Eusanio Ties Single-Game Hits Record
- Senior third baseman Steven D'Eusanio tied the Youngstown State single-game hits record with six hits in a 17-13 loss to Milwaukee on April 15. D'Eusanio hit four singles, a double and a home run to go 6-for-6 to match John Koehnlein's six-hit effort in seven at bats on May 24, 2007.
- The Willoughby, Ohio, native finished the season tied for the team lead with a career-high seven home runs and 36 runs scored while ranking second on the squad with 83 total bases and a .435 slugging percentage. D'Eusanio also ranked third on the team with a .277 batting average, 53 hits and 28 RBIs. He hit safely in eight straight games from April 9 to April 24.
Penguins Among the League Leaders
- On the mound, the Penguins led the Horizon League with a .258 opponent batting average while ranking second with a 5.44 team ERA, 434 strikeouts and 11 saves. Offensively, YSU ranked tied for second in the league with 14 triples and third with 249 walks.
- YSU's 434 strikeouts as a pitching staff rank as the second most in a season in program history. It marks just the fifth time in school history that the Guins have recorded at least 400 strikeouts in a season. The Penguins set the school record with 447 strikeouts as a team in 2021. YSU's 11 saves rank as the second most in a season in program history, and they are the most since the Penguins set the school record with 14 saves in 1995.
- YSU's 249 walks rank as the second most in a season in program history. The Penguins set the school record with 272 walks in 2018, and their 243 walks in 2019 rank as the third most in a season in school history. Therefore, the three-highest single-season walk totals in program history have come during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
- Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy led the Horizon League and ranked 41st nationally with 46 walks in 2022. O'Shaughnessy's 46 walks rank as the second most in a season in program history. The senior's 46 walks are the most by a Penguin since Steve Mefferd set the single-season YSU record with 52 free passes in 2001.
- O'Shaughnessy drew at least one walk in 29 different games this season. He recorded multiple walks in 14 different contests. The Poland, Ohio, native drew a season-high three walks at UT Rio Grande Valley on March 4 and in the first game of a doubleheader at Purdue Fort Wayne on March 20.
- O'Shaughnessy joined his brother Braeden in setting a new single-season school record with 57 games played while making 56 starts in 2022. The O'Shaughnessy brothers were the only two Penguins to play in all 57 games of the campaign. O'Shaughnessy finished the season ranking second on the team with 30 RBIs and third with a .373 on-base percentage.
- Junior left-hander Nathan Ball led the Horizon League and ranked 36th nationally with nine saves in 2022. Ball's nine saves are tied for the second most in a season in program history. The Perrysburg, Ohio, native is just the third player in school history to record at least nine saves in a season. Ball is the first Penguin to record at least nine saves in a season since Andy Svitak had nine in 2007. Marc Morgan set the single-season school record with 10 saves in 1995.
- Ball finished the 2022 season with 27 strikeouts and a .244 opponent batting average in 24.1 innings over a career-high 26 appearances. Ball's nine career saves are tied for the sixth most in program history. He became the seventh player in YSU history to record at least nine career saves.
- Junior right-hander Casey Marshalwitz led the Horizon League with a career-high 29 appearances, all of which came out of the bullpen. Marshalwitz's 29 appearances are tied for the third most in a season in program history. The Gibsonia, Pa., native is the first Penguin to appear in at least 29 games since Joe King made 29 appearances in 2017.
Three Penguins Earn All-Academic Recognition
- Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy and senior right-hander Jon Snyder were each named to the 2022 Horizon League All-Academic Team. In addition, senior third baseman Steven D'Eusanio was named to the All-Academic Honorable Mention Team.
- The Penguins had multiple players selected to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the third straight season. Youngstown State had not had multiple players earn all-academic recognition in three straight seasons since 2012-14. YSU has now had at least one player earn all-academic honors in each of Dan Bertolini's six seasons as head coach.
- Snyder became just the fourth player in program history to earn all-academic honors three times. The last YSU player to become a three-time member of the all-academic team was Phil Lipari from 2012-14. O'Shaughnessy became the 16th player in program history to be a two-time all-academic honoree.
