Rochester, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's track and field team soared to their eighth consecutive and 14th overall Horizon League Outdoor Championship on a sunny and windy afternoon at the at the Elaine Leigh Track & Field Complex.
YSU finished with a total of 252 points, outdistancing second-place Oakland by a whopping 107 points. The Guins almost outscored the Golden Grizzlies on the final day by adding 139 points to the overall tally. For the event, Oakland was second with 145 points while Milwaukee was third with 140.
The Penguins won five running events on the final day winning the two longest races – the 5000 meters and 1500m – and the shortest three – 100m, 100m hurdles and 200m.
Morgan Cole capped a 10k, 5k sweep with her win on Sunday in the final individual event. In the 100m and the 200m, YSU had the top two finishers in each event.
Cole took first place with a time of 17:25.45 to win the 5,000m by two seconds. It was the second straight victory in the race for Cole who won last year at YSU. Coming in third with a time of 17:32.68 was
Ashleigh Rowley.
In the 1500m run, 2022 Alfreeda Goff Outdoor Athlete of the Year
Nicole Squatrito took the crown with a time of 4:37.65. Placing fourth was Rowley who posted a time of 4:40.94 while
Carly Hall was sixth at 4:42.52. In the 800m, Penguins placed second, third and fourth.
Aiamyia Dudley placed second with a time of 2:16.33, Squatrito was third with a time of 2:16.64 and
Natalie Fleming was fourth clocking a 2:16.88.
In the 100m dash,
Kyndia Matlock raced to the title with a time of 11.54 seconds while
Suerethia Henderson finished second posting a 11.58. In the 200m, the two reversed order as Henderson posted the win with a 24.04 second performance and Matlock took the silver with a time of 24.24 seconds.
In the 100m hurdles,
Madison Murry became the first Penguin since 2018 to win the event running a time of 14.04 to take the title.
Nia Williams-Matthews was second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.10m. In the 4x100m relay, the Guins were second with a time of 46.36 seconds.
Olivia Jones added a fourth-place finish in the high jump clearing a height of 1.62m.
