Box Score The Youngstown State men's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Horizon League play with a 5-2 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (7-8 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League) won the doubles point and swept four of the six singles contests against the Norse (6-6, 1-3).
YSU built a 1-0 lead by winning the two completed doubles matches. At No. 3, Clement Mainguy and David Alvarez Moreno earned a hard-fought 6-4 win in the first completed match. Soon after, Will Everett and Asier Pena Ibanez fought off a comeback attempt at No. 2 to win their match 6-4.
After the Norse tied the contest 1-1, the Guins won three matchs in a span of 15 minutes to clinch the match. Moreno started the surge with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vincent Knott at No. 5. Mainguy followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tom Berry in the No. 3 spot. Moving up to No. 2, Harry Fouzas clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jorge Rodriguez.
Following a Norse three-set win in a super tiebreaker, Laurentiu Mandocescu won his second straight decision with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at No. 1 over Emilien Burnel.
YSU returns to Horizon League play on Saturday, April 2 when it visits UIC.
