The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Butler on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (5-8) closed out the non-league portion of their schedule with the contest agains the Bulldogs (7-7).
YSU got off to a strong start by playing strong in doubles. The Guins made quick work of the Bulldogs in under 30 minutes to claim the point.
At No. 2, William Everett and Nathan Favier cruised to a 6-0 win over Borja Miralles and Ryan Roegner. At No. 3, Clement Mainguy and David Alvarez Moreno clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Zach Trimpe and Patrick Joss.
Alvarez Moreno carried his strong effort in doubles over to singles earning a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot. However, Butler won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 3-2 lead.
The clinching match was at No. 5 where Patrick Joss beat Everett 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
The longest contest of the match was at No. 4 between Harry Fouzas and Borja Miralles. The contest went two hours and 30 minutes and featured the best-of-10 third-set super tiebreak. Fouzas won the first set 7-6, including winning all seven points of the tiebreaker. The second set featured more back and forth between the players. With the match tied at six, Miralles won the tiebreaker 12-10 fighting off three match points by Fouzas. In the super, Fouzas broke open a 4-3 set by scoring four straight points, including a between the legs winner. At 9-5, Miralles' return was just wide and Fouzas claimed the victory.
The Penguins open Horizon League play the next time out when the entertain Cleveland State on Friday afternoon. First serve at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center is set for 3 p.m.
