The Youngstown State men's tennis team used strong play in singles for a hard fought 5-2 victory over IU Indy on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
After losing the doubles point, the Guins roared back in singles, winning five of six matches. With the victory, YSU improves to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in HL matches. The Jaguars fall to 6-17 and 2-3 in HL play. The Guins are now also 7-1 at home this spring.
The Jaguars took the early lead in the match by winning the doubles point. IUI won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the decision. The Penguins' duo at No. 3, Mihai Haita and Oscar Gippet collected a 6-3 win.
The first singles victory for YSU was by Rafael Le Fur at No. 3 as he picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory. YSU's second win of the contest was at No. 5 by Gippet. Gippet earned a 6-2, 6-4 win giving the Guins a 2-1 lead.
The Jaguars pulled the dual even with a three-set win at No. 2 singles.
YSU went back in front 3-2 on a three-set win by Alexis Maulouet at No. 1 singles. At No. 1, he won his first set 6-2, before dropping the second, 7-6. He came back strong in the third winning, 6-0.
The Guins closed out the match with near simultaneous wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
At No. 4, Gippet earned a 7-6, 7-5 win and at No. 6, Haita claimed a 6-2, 7-6 victory.
The Penguins return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Northern Kentucky. First serve for the Senior Day contest against the Norse is set for 10 a.m.
