Bowling Beats Top-Ranked McKendree, Qualifies Ninth at Mid-Winter Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team picked up an impressive win over No. 1 McKendree and moved up one place in the team standings on Saturday at the Mid-Winter Invitational.
The No. 9 Penguins will be seeded ninth in Sunday's bracket as they moved up from 10th as qualifying concluded on Saturday at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center. Youngstown State averaged 194.1 collectively on Saturday in the traditional round.
"I'm proud of our ladies for how they competed and handled themselves today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "They are being great teammates, enjoying themselves, and executing at a pretty darn high level. I have to do a better job of putting them in stronger positions to keep up with the scoring pace. I like where we are as a group heading into tomorrow and am looking forward to a strong Sunday finish."
The Penguins' win over the Bearcats was their third over the No. 1 team this season and their seventh all-time. YSU totaled 1,008 against McKendree behind a 215 game from Madyson Marx, a 214 from Emma Wrenn and a 213 from Kirsten Moore. However, that ended up being YSU's only head-to-head win of the afternoon.
YSU dropped 107 pins in its next match in a 962-901 loss to No. 21 Lincoln Memorial, and it fell 1,055-965 to No. 8 Stephen F. Austin. No. 3 Nebraska won in YSU's fourth match of the day 1,118-966, and the Penguins were back above 1,000 for their final match but fell 1,027-1,013 to Drury.
Individually, Wrenn was the Penguins' top finisher in 20th with a five-game total of 1,046. Marx topped 200 three times as part of a 963 set that placed her in a tie for 45th, and Jade Cote placed 51st with a 955 as the only other Penguin to bowl in all five matches. Emma Dockery was back in action for the first time this semester and averaged 197.8 over four games.
Youngstown State will open the best-of-seven Baker matches in bracket play against No. 20 Lewis on Sunday at 9:10 a.m. Eastern.
