Bowling Wins Twice, Averages 210 on Sunday at Mid-Winter Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team went 2-1 in bracket play and beat No. 1 McKendree for the second straight day to finish its competition at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark. The three-day tournament hosted by Arkansas State was held at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center.
The Penguins began the day in ninth place, and they climbed one spot with their two wins in the best-of-seven Baker format. Youngstown State averaged an impressive 210.72 over their 18 games, which was the second-best average in bracket play in program history.
"We came to play today with a better picture and better rhythm, and we elevated as a group," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "While we do have some little things to clean up with spare shooting and overall being more disciplined, I like where we are and where we are heading. I can sense we are all hungry and excited to work this week to continue elevating."
Youngstown State topped No. 20 Lewis 4-1 to begin the morning as it posted games of 221, 235 and 237. The Penguins then took a 3-1 lead on McKendree before the top-ranked Bearcats stormed back with a 246 and 247 in games five and six to tie the match. Youngstown State responded with a 266, the fifth-best Baker game in school history, to win game seven 266-194 and win the match. YSU also beat McKendree in traditional play on Saturday.
The Penguins built a 2-1 lead on Louisiana Tech in their next match with a 224-173 win in game two and a 215-211 edge in game three, but the Lady Techsters rallied to take the next three games and win the match. Game five was decided by one pin, 210-209.
Youngstown State will be back on the lanes next week as it will travel to Nebraska for the Big Red Invitational from Feb. 25-27.
