The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Friday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. YSU beat Northern Illinois 5-2 and Niagara 6-1 in its 2022 home debut.
YSU improved to 3-5 on the season while the Huskies and the Purple Eagles each suffered their first losses of the season.
Northern Illinois
YSU ralled to win the doubles point and that momentum carried into singles play as the Penguins won four of the six matches. After YSU and NIU split the first two doubles contests, the Guins trailed 5-3 in the other contest. However, YSU rallied for a 7-5 win to earn the point.
In singles play, Laurentiu Mandocescu picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1. At No. 2, Nathan Favier continued his strong play of late cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win. At No. 4 singles, Harry Fouzas rallied after dropping the first set 6-4, to win the next two 7-5, 6-4 and clinch the win for the Guins. At No. 6, Clement Mainguy won 6-1, 6-7, 7-6 for the fourth Penguin singles victory.
Niagara
YSU and Niagara split the first two doubles contests, but the Guins earned the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. At No. 3, YSU picked up a 6-2 victory.
In singles play, Favier moved up to the No. 1 spot and picked up an impressive 6-1, 6-0 triumph. At No. 4 singles, Will Everett picked up a solid 7-5, 6-3 win. YSU was dominant at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At No. 5 singles, David Alvarez Moreno picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win and at No. 6 Asier Pena Ibanez earned a 6-1, 6-1 win.
The Penguins return to action on Sunday when they play host to James Madison and Saint Francis.
