UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – Highlighted by Sean Peterson's new school record, the Youngstown State track and field program tallied 23 top-5 finishes, including six event victories, on Saturday at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge.
Making his event debut, Peterson set a new YSU program record in the men's 1000 run, posting a time of 2:22.17. The previous record (2:27.70) was held by former Penguin-standout R.D. Goodright and was set in 2006. Peterson's mark also sets a new personal-best.
Running Highlights
The Penguins clocked three of the top-4 preliminary times in the women's 60m, as Jahniya Bowers, Kyndia Matlock and Suerethia Henderson each finished atop their respective heats to earn automatic bids to Saturday's event final. The Penguins would go onto sweep the top three spots in the final heat, as Bowers took the crown with a time of 7.42 to capture her third event title in as many meets on the 2021-22 indoor season. Just behind, Henderson (7.61) and Matlock (7.63) finished second and third, respectively.
Bowers would step into the blocks later in the afternoon and tally another event win in the women's 200m. The Youngstown, Ohio, native posted a 24.24 to edge the rest of the field. Also showing their speed, Henderson (24.89) finished third, Murry (25.35 - P.B.) tabbed fourth and Matlock (25.54) grabbed the sixth-place slot.
Anthony Woods tabbed his second event win as a Penguin in the 60m, clocking a 6.68 to pace the rest of the field. Woods entered the event's final heat owning the third-fastest time of the preliminary round.
Following sitting out the indoor season a year ago, Nicole Squatrito made her return to the track in style with an 800m event victory. Squatrito turned in a time of 2:14.81 finish ahead of the pack. Not to be outdone, Aiamyia Dudley clocked a 2:17.57 to finish third and Natalie Fleming ran a 2:20.24 to finish seventh. On the men's side, Evan Alten, in his event debut, would post a 1:57.10 to earn a top-5 finish in the event. Ty Coon finished ninth with a time of 1:58.72.
In the women's 3000m, Morgan Cole clocked the second-fastest mark in school history with a time of 9:54.69. Cole earned a runner-up finish with the effort. In the men's event, the Penguins were paced by Hunter Christopher who finished fifth with a time of 8:19.09 – the fourth-fastest mark in YSU history. Right behind, fellow sophomore Ryan Meadows recorded the sixth-fastest 3000m time in school history (8:22.30) to finish eighth overall. Chase Easterling (8:33.94) and Tyler Clark (8:35.16 – P.B.) finished 9, 10.
Second-year Penguin hurdler Madison Murry clocked the second-fastest time of her heat and seventh-fastest mark overall during the preliminary races of the women's 60m hurdles. Out of lane one, Murry would go onto run a time of 8.95 during Saturday's final to finish seventh in the event. Luke Laubacher was the lone YSU representative in the men's 60m hurdles event final and would go onto finish sixth with a time of 8.41.
Ryan Laird highlighted the YSU effort in the 400m event, posting a personal-best time of 51.06 – the quickest time of his heat and the eight-fastest time of the meet. Fellow first-year Penguin William Delbaugh would finish 12th with a time of 51.60.
Ty Coon led the YSU effort in the men's mile run, recording a personal-best mark of 4:15.07 to finish fourth in his heat and notch his second top-10 finish of the day. Ethan Sparks ran a 4:19.07 to finish 14th. In the women's event, first-year Penguin Carly Hall clocked a personal-best time of 5:16.68 to finish inside the top-20 competitors. Hall's time qualified as the program's quickest time in the event during the 2021-22 season. Just two sports behind, Maggie Sebest (5:31.83) turned in the second-fastest time in her heat to finish 22nd.
Field Event Highlights
Victoria Lanese tallied her second-straight event victory in the women's high jump, clearing a 1.77m bar on her first attempt. Lanese attempted 1.83m, which would be a new YSU school record. In the men's competition, Lonnie Harper tallied a third-place finish with a 2.03m jump and Terron Taylor (1.95m) finished fifth.
Wyatt Lefker tallied his second top-2 finish in as many meets during Saturday's men's pole vault competition. Lefker cleared a 4.95m bar in his second attempt at the height, but couldn't get over the bar at his current YSU school record height of 5.15m or 5.35m. On the women's side, Erin Bogard tabbed a third-place finish with a 3.65m vault. Sydney Walker finished eighth, clearing 3.35m.
In the men's long jump, YSU placed three marks in the top-4 and four in the top-6, including owning the second and third best jumps of the meet. Daiquain Watson led the Penguins with a runner-up finish in the event, posting a 6.99m jump fifth attempt. A spot behind, Samuel Challis grabbed the bronze with 6.99m mark. After, Tye Hunt (6.88) and Luke Laubacher (6.63m) placed fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Penguins went 7, 9, 10 on the women's side, with Nia Williams-Matthews logging the team's best jump of the afternoon of 5.37m on her second attempt of the event. Jessica Stever was next with a 5.25m mark and Alexis Prater rounded out the top-10 with a 5.25m launch.
Williams-Matthews upped her finish in the long jump, getting the third-place nod in the triple jump with an 11.61m mark. Fellow sophomore Stephanie Simon (11.28m) finished sixth.
Dominic Perry upped his personal-best mark in the shot put, throwing 17.71m on his third attempt of the event for a fourth-place overall finish on the day. Teammate and fellow second-year thrower Brock Grundy threw 15.89m for seventh. In the women's event, Molly Radcliffe grabbed a top-8 finish in the women's shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.54 on her first attempt.

The Penguins get set to host a pair of meets on back-to-back weekends inside the WATTS. The annual YSU Collegiate Holiday Classic is scheduled for Jan. 21, while the two-day YSU Mid-Major Invitational will follow on Jan. 28-29.
