Box Score Junior Marcella Sizer's goal with just 30 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift the Youngstown women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at Farmers National Bank Field.
Junior Regan LaVigna chipped a pass over the last line of Titan's defenders and Sizer found the ball in the middle of the box for a one-on-one with the Titan's goalkeeper. Sizer slipped a left-footed shot through the keeper's legs for the game-winner.
The Penguins, who picked up their first win of the year, improve to 1-6-3 overall and 1-0-2 in Horizon League play while the Titans fall to 1-9-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.
After an evenly matched first half that saw each team record three shots on goal, Youngstown State freshman Erika Maliska scored her first career goal at the 59:34 of the match. Junior Mikayla Mustard retrieved a long corner kick and centered the ball back to Maliska who lofted a shot from 30 yard out and over the outstretched arms of Titans goalkeeper Marisa Silver.
The Titans knotted the match at 1-1 after a goal by Erica Toupin in the 64th minute.
Youngstown State goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick picked up her first career win and posted another solid game in the net tallying six saves and facing 12 total shots.
The Penguins outshot the Titans, 8-6, in the second half and controlled the overtime by taking four shots to Detroit Mercy's zero.
For the match, Youngstown State outshot the Titans, 16-12, and recorded six corners to the Titans' four.
The Penguins visit league co-leader Milwaukee, Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m.
