Penguins Sweep Doubleheader Against Purdue Fort Wayne

The Youngstown State baseball team earned wins of 6-2 and 15-4 to sweep a Horizon League doubleheader against Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins improve to 25-20 overall and 20-14 in Horizon League play while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 9-27 overall and 6-20 in league action. YSU has now won eight straight games at Eastwood Field to improve its home record to 15-2. The Penguins have reached 15 home wins for the first time since 2003. YSU has also reached 25 overall wins for the first time since 2006. With their win in game one on Friday, the Penguins set a new program record with their 19th conference win. The previous record of 18 conference wins was set in 1995 when YSU went 18-4 in Mid-Continent Conference play.

Game 1 Recap

Collin Floyd tossed his sixth complete game of the season to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins scored five runs over the first two innings, and that was all the run support that Floyd would need. The senior left-hander won his seventh decision of the season to become the first Penguin since Aaron Swenson in 2010 to win at least seven games in a season. He allowed two runs, one of them earned, on seven hits and struck out seven batters in a seven-inning complete game. Floyd retired the first six batters he faced as he sat down the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings. He recorded a strikeout in six different innings, and he had two punch outs in the fifth.

Turner Grau went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while Lucas Nasonti was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Blaze Glenn and Dominick Bucko also had two hits apiece as the Penguins outhit the Mastodons 9-7. Jeff Wehler added an RBI triple and a run scored.

Youngstown State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Bucko hit a two-out single and advanced to third on a single by Glenn. Bucko then scored on a balk and Glenn came around to score on an RBI single by Grau.

The Penguins pushed their lead to 5-0 with three runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the second inning. Steven D'Eusanio reached on an error, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Nasonti. Wehler followed with an RBI triple to right center, and he came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Phillip Glasser.

Purdue Fort Wayne got on the board with one run on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Zac Baden and Aaron Chapman hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning, and Baden scored when Chapman got into a rundown attempting to steal second base.

YSU extended its lead to 6-1 when Grau led off the bottom of the fifth inning with his sixth home run of the season.

The Mastodons shaved the Penguins' lead to 6-2 with one unearned run on two hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning. Baden reached with a one-out single and scored on an error for the final run of the contest.

Baden and Chapman each had two hits to pace the Mastodons offensively.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Kevin Fee suffered his third loss of the season after allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Sean Ferguson did not allow a hit and struck out a pair in 0.2 innings of relief.

Game 2 Recap

The Youngstown State baseball team scored eight runs over the first three innings on its way to a 15-4 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins scored four runs in the first inning before the Mastodons cut their lead in half with two runs in the top of the third. YSU answered with four runs in the home half of the third to build an 8-2 lead before Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice in the top of the fifth. YSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to move in front 10-4, and it added five runs in the eighth to produce the final margin.

Glenn went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases while Padraig O'Shaughnessy was 3-for-5 with a two-run inside-the-park home run and a career-high five RBIs. O'Shaughnessy also set a new career high with three hits. Bucko was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, three RBIs and three runs scored while Wehler hit a solo home run and scored twice.

YSU starter Colin Clark allowed four runs, two of them earned, on six hits and struck out six batters over five innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. Clark recorded a strikeout in three different innings, and he had multiple punch outs in two different frames. Conner Johnson, Chad Coles and Nathan Ball combined to limit the Mastodons to just two hits over four scoreless innings of relief.

Youngstown State scored four runs on four hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning. Wehler led off the inning with a solo home run to left field before Glenn reached with a two-out single. Grau then singled through the right side and a pair of ensuing errors allowed Glenn to score. Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with a two-run inside-the-park home run down the right field line to give YSU a 4-0 lead.

Purdue Fort Wayne cut YSU's lead in half at 4-2 with two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. After Chapman reached on a two-out error by Wehler, Garett Lake hit a two-run home run to right field.

The Penguins responded with four runs on three hits in the home half of the third to extend their lead to 8-2. After Glasser was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, Bucko belted a two-run blast to right field. Glenn followed with a single and Grau brought him home with an RBI triple to right center. Padraig O'Shaughnessy drove in Grau with an RBI groundout to plate YSU's eighth run.

The Mastodons scored a pair of runs on two hits in the top of the fifth inning to pull within 8-4. Chapman hit a one-out single and Trenton Stoner reached base on a wild pitch following a strikeout. After the runners advanced 90 feet on a double steal, Andrew Lawvere delivered a two-run single through the left side.

YSU answered with two runs of its own in the home half of the fifth to move in front 10-4. Bucko hit a leadoff double and Glenn followed with a single to set up a two-run single through the right side by Padraig O'Shaughnessy.

The Penguins tacked on five runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to produce the final margin of 15-4. Bucko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Glenn delivered a two-run double to left center. Bucko scored on an RBI groundout by Grau and Glenn scored on a wild pitch.

Chapman and Luke Miles each had two hits to lead Purdue Fort Wayne offensively while Lake and Lawvere each collected two RBIs.

Purdue Fort Wayne starter Gerald Pintarich suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs on 11 hits over six innings. Ryan Mollette was responsible for three runs on two hits over 1.1 innings while Sam Assaf allowed two runs on two hits over 0.2 innings.
