Penguins Set Program Record for Home Wins with 10-2 Victory Over Milwaukee on Senior Day

Box Score

The Youngstown State baseball team set a new program record with its 19th home win and celebrated Senior Day with a 10-2 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins improved to 19-4 at home this season to top the previous record for home wins of 18 that was set in 1977 when the team was coached by Dom Rosselli and played at Pemberton Park. Youngstown State finished the regular season with a 32-22 record and will enter the Horizon League Championship as the third seed. The Penguins also finished the regular season with a 24-16 mark in Horizon League play.

YSU scored six runs over the first five innings to build a 6-1 advantage before Milwaukee scored once in the top of the eighth to pull within four runs. The Penguins responded by scoring four runs in the home half of the eighth to pull away for the 10-2 victory. Youngstown State earned a 3-1 series victory after winning the first two games of the four-game set.

While the seniors were celebrated in pregame in leading the program to its most wins since 1995, junior Travis Perry took the spotlight with his best start on the mound this season. Perry was outstanding in a winning effort in what was his first start since the season-opening series at Troy on Feb. 20. The junior did not allow any earned runs, surrendered just one hit and walked one batter while striking out four over six innings. The only baserunners he allowed both came in the second inning, and he retired the final 14 batters he faced. The Oil City, Pa., native retired the side in order in five of the six innings he was on the mound.

Dalton Earich worked a scoreless seventh inning before Chad Coles allowed one run on one hit in the eighth. Gary Clift Jr. surrendered a leadoff hit in the ninth before giving way to Joel Hake. Hake induced a 4-6-3 double play and then struck out Quinton Morris to end the game.

Blaze Glenn went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Braeden O'Shaughnessy was 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. Jeff Wehler was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases. The Penguins matched their season high with six stolen bases in the contest.

Milwaukee starter Andrew Neu suffered the loss after allowing five runs on three hits and five walks over two innings. Neu walked three of the first four batters he faced, including Glenn, who fouled off five straight offerings during an 11-pitch at bat. Wehler, who earlier walked and stole second, scored on a wild pitch during Glenn's lengthy time at the plate, for the game's first run, and Phillip Glasser and Glenn scored on a two-run triple by Braeden O'Shaughnessy. O'Shaughnessy's triple was the first ball put in play by the Penguins during the inning as the first five hitters walked or struck out.

Milwaukee's only run against Perry was unearned, and it came on an RBI single by Jake Novak. After the run-scoring hit, Perry struck out Morris and got Cherokee LeBeau to fly out to start his run of 14 consecutive outs to end his day.

The Penguins got the run back in the bottom of the second inning as Lucas Nasonti walked, advanced on singles by Wehler and Glasser and scored on Dominick Bucko's sacrifice fly.

Turner Grau was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Nick Caruso's squeeze in the third inning to up YSU's lead to 5-1, and O'Shaughnessy singled and scored on an error on another Caruso bunt in the fifth to make it 6-1.

LeBeau hit a leadoff double in the eighth and scored on a ground out for Milwaukee's final run, and the Penguins answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wehler walked, stole second and scored on Glasser's sacrifice fly for the first run, and Glenn plated Bucko on a two-out single. Glenn would come around to score on a wild pitch, and Caruso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to produce YSU's 10th and final run.

Milwaukee's Ryan Hoerter allowed one unearned run on three hits over three innings of relief before Nick Gilhaus tossed two scoreless innings. Will Wohlt was responsible for one run over two thirds of an inning, and David Williams surrendered three runs on three hits without recording an out. Patrick Tomfohrde retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning.

The Penguins will now face second-seeded UIC in the opening round of the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Championship on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and YSNLive.com.
