Box Score 2 The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against UIC on Saturday at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The Penguins fell 3-1 in game one before suffering an 8-7 defeat in game two. Youngstown State falls to 23-19 overall and 18-13 in Horizon League play while UIC improves to 20-16 overall and 19-11 in league action.
Game 1 Recap
UIC starter Chris Torres allowed one run on four hits over 5.1 innings to lead the Flames to a 3-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Curtis Granderson Stadium.
The Flames took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning before the Penguins cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth. UIC scored once in the home half of the sixth to produce the final margin.
Torres retired the side in order in the second, third and fifth innings while retiring eight straight batters at one point. He faced the minimum in each of the first three frames. Torres held the Penguins scoreless on just two hits over the first five innings.
For the second straight game to begin the series, the contest was pitcher's duel between starters. YSU starter Collin Floyd allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out five batters over 5.2 innings of work. He retired the side in order in the fifth inning and had a strikeout in three different frames. Floyd recorded multiple punch outs in two different innings.
Jeff Wehler produced YSU's lone run with an RBI double while Phillip Glasser, Blaze Glenn and Lucas Nasonti also had hits for the Penguins. UIC outhit YSU 8-4 in the seven-inning affair.
The Flames scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Cole Conn hit a leadoff double down the left field line and Thomas Norton followed with a single to right field. Conn came around to score on an RBI groundout by Garrett McCarthy and Norton scored on a wild pitch.
The Penguins missed a scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth inning when Glasser drew a one-out walk and was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base on a two-out double to left field by Glenn.
Youngstown State cut UIC's lead to 2-1 with one run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Nasonti hit a one-out double to right center and Wehler followed with an RBI double to left center.
UIC added some insurance with one run on a pair of hits in the home half of the sixth. After Floyd retired the first two batters of the inning, McCarthy and Cory Moore delivered back-to-back two-out doubles to push the Flames' advantage to 3-1.
Bryan Rosario went 2-for-3 to lead the Flames offensively while McCarthy and Moore each collected a double and an RBI.
Torres earned his fifth victory to improve to 5-1 on the season while Fred Gosbeth did not allow a hit and had two strikeouts over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up his third save.
Game 2 Recap
UIC scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 7-1 deficit and earn an 8-7 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Penguins built a 5-0 advantage before UIC got one run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. After YSU pushed its lead to 7-1 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, UIC exploded for seven runs on five hits including four home runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 2-1 series lead.
The Penguins hit three home runs in the contest but were outhit by the Flames 10-8. Wehler set a new career high with four hits including two doubles and a home run. He also recorded two RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Dominick Bucko went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and four RBIs while Turner Grau added a solo blast.
UIC's late-game comeback spoiled another solid pitching performance by YSU starter Jon Snyder. The junior right-hander allowed just one run on five hits and struck out four batters over six innings in a no-decision. Snyder registered a strikeout in three different innings, and he had two punch outs in the third. The Penguins held a 6-1 lead when he handed the ball to the bullpen.
The Penguins took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Wehler led off the game with a towering solo home run to left field. YSU extended its lead to 5-0 with four runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Caruso hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI double by Wehler. After Glasser drew a two-out walk, Dominick Bucko hit a three-run blast over the wall in the right field.
The Flames got on the board with one run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a one-out double by Ryan Nagelbach, Rosario delivered a two-out RBI single to left field to cut YSU's lead to 5-1.
The Penguins pushed their lead back to five runs at 6-1 in the top of the sixth when Turner Grau led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field. YSU increased its advantage to 7-1 with one run on one hit in the top of the seventh inning. Wehler hit a one-out single and Glasser followed with a walk. After the runners moved up 90 feet on a double steal, Wehler scored on an RBI single to second base by Bucko.
UIC scored seven runs on five hits including four home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead. McCarthy was hit by a pitch with one out and Moore followed with a single through the right side. Sean Dee then hit a three-run home run to left field. After Nagelbach drew a one-out walk, Rosario sent a two-out, two-run shot to right center field. Matt Bottcher and Conn followed with back-to-back solo homers to put the Flames in front for good.
Conner Johnson did not allow a hit during a scoreless seventh inning while Andrew Russell was responsible for four runs on two hits in the eighth. Chad Coles allowed three runs on three home runs in the eighth while striking out a pair of batters.
UIC starter Ryan O'Reilly surrendered seven runs on seven hits and struck out six over 6.1 innings. Tanner Shears, Mark McCabe and Gosbeth combined to hold the Penguins scoreless on just one hit over the final 2.2 innings. McCabe was awarded his first victory of the season while Gosbeth struck out the side in the top of the ninth to earn his second save of the day and fourth of the campaign.
Rosario went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace UIC offensively while Dee matched him with three RBIs of his own. Seven different Flames recorded a hit in the contest.
Youngstown State will go for the series split in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and YSNLive.com.
