Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team set a new program record for Horizon League wins and completed the four-game series sweep with an 18-6 victory over Oakland on Sunday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins, who have now won five straight games, improved to 22-17 overall and 17-11 in Horizon League play to surpass the previous program record of 16 league wins, which was set in 2006. Oakland falls to 9-22 overall and 3-17 in league action. Youngstown State also improved to 13-2 at Eastwood Field.
Blaze Glenn went 3-for-6 with a three-run home run, two runs scored and five RBIs. Jeff Wehler went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed four runs on six hits over five innings to earn his third victory of the season. Andrew Russell and Nathan Ball each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Brosky allowed one unearned run in the eighth inning, and Dalton Earich was charged with one run in the ninth.
Youngstown State jumped out to an early lead with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Wehler hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a wild pitch before Glenn hit a towering three-run blast to left field to put the Penguins ahead 4-0.
The Penguins pushed their lead to 6-0 with two runs on one hit and one error in the bottom of the second inning. Lucas Nasonti reached on an error to begin the inning, and Wehler followed with an RBI triple to right field. Phillip Glasser then brought Wehler home with an RBI groundout to second base.
YSU increased its lead to 11-0 with five runs on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the third inning. Turner Grau drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an error following a base hit by Braeden O'Shaughnessy. O'Shaughessy would come around to score on a wild pitch before Dominick Bucko drew a bases-loaded walk. Glenn then followed with an RBI single that plated Wehler, and an ensuing error allowed Glassser to score YSU's 11th run.
Oakland got on the board with one run on two hits in the top of the fourth inning. Brenton Phillips hit a leadoff single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Blake Griffith to cut YSU's lead to 11-1.
Youngstown State got the run back in the home half of the fourth when Braeden O'Shaughnessy was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI single by Wehler.
The Golden Grizzlies scored three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to shave the Penguins' advantage to 12-4. Reagan Paulina hit a leadoff single and came around to score on an RBI single by Phillips. Cam Post then delivered a two-run single to left field.
The Penguins extended their lead to 18-4 with six runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the seventh inning. Glenn delivered an RBI single, Grau hit a two-run triple, Dylan Swarmer had an RBI double and Andre Good added a pinch-hit RBI single.
Paulina scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning, and Michael Stygles drew a bases-load walk in the ninth to produce the final score of 18-6.
Oakland starter Brandon Deans took the loss after allowing seven runs, six of them earned, on three hits over two innings of work. Phillips and Post each collected a pair of hits to lead the Golden Grizzlies offensively.
Youngstown State will continue Horizon League play next weekend with a four-game series at UIC. The Penguins and Flames will open the series on Friday with a single game at 5:05 p.m. ET.
