Box Score 2 Senior left-hander Collin Floyd broke the school record for career strikeouts as the Youngstown State baseball team split a doubleheader with UIC on Friday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins earned a 2-1 walk-off victory in game one before falling 6-0 in game two. YSU is now 12-13 overall and 7-7 in Horizon League play while UIC is 8-12 overall and 7-7 against the conference.
Game 1 Recap
The Youngstown State baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 2-1 walk-off victory over UIC in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Eastwood Field.
The game was a pitcher's duel between YSU's Floyd and UIC's Jacob Key as the contest remained scoreless until the Flames scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth. The first hit of the game did not come until the top of the fourth inning.
Floyd, who earned his fourth win of the season, became YSU's all-time strikeout leader with this sixth strikeout of the game in the top of the sixth inning as he got Thomas Smart to strike out looking on a 1-2 pitch. He recorded the 266th strikeout of his career, breaking Aaron Swenson's previous record of 265, which had stood since 2010. Floyd allowed just the one unearned run on three hits and struck out eight batters over eight innings of work. The Akron, Ohio, native recorded a strikeout in seven different innings, and he faced the minimum in three different frames.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Turner Grau reached with a leadoff single to shortstop. After Blaze Glenn struck out, Dominick Bucko sent an RBI triple to right center field that plated Grau to tie the game at 1-1. Nick Caruso followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Bucko to score the winning run.
Key suffered his second loss of the season after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three over 7.2 innings. He surrendered just one hit and no runs over his first seven innings on the mound as he retired the Penguins in order in five different frames. Key, who retired the first seven batters he faced, allowed just two baserunners over the first seven innings of the contest.
In the top of the eighth inning, Smart reached on a two-out error and was able to score when Bucko dropped a fly ball in right field off the bat of Ryan Nagelbach.
Each team collected three hits and Youngstown State overcame four defensive errors. UIC left a total of five runners on base.
Bucko, Grau and Padraig O'Shaughnessy each had hits for the Penguins while Nagelbach, Matt Bottcher and Cole Conn each recorded hits for the Flames.
Game 2 Recap
UIC starter Cristian Lopez allowed two hits in a seven-inning complete game shutout to lead the Flames to a 6-0 win over the Youngstown State baseball team in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.
After allowing one hit in each of the first two innings, Lopez held the Penguins without a hit over their final five at bats. He retired YSU in order in three different innings, and he retired the final nine batters he faced.
Bucko and Jeff Wehler each recorded a base hit for the Penguins.
YSU starter Colin Clark took his fourth loss of the season after allowing four runs on five hits over two innings. Chad Coles surrendered one run on four hits in two innings while Andrew Russell was responsible for one run on one hit over 1.2 innings. Conner Johnson did not allow a hit and struck out a pair of batters over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Smart, Bottcher and Bryan Rosario each had two hits to pace the Flames offensively while Joshua Figueroa drove in a pair of runs.
The Flames grabbed an early lead with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Smart hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a one-out double by Bottcher. After Figueroa brought home Smart with a sacrifice fly, Conn delivered an RBI single that plated Bottcher.
UIC added to its lead with a pair of runs on two hits in the top of the second inning. Rosario and Thomas Norton hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning, and Rosario scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Lin-Peistrup. During the next at bat, Norton scored on a wild pitch to push the Flames' advantage to 4-0.
UIC added a run in the top of third when Nagelbach hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single from Figueroa. The Flames tacked on their final run to make it 6-0 in the top of the sixth when Rosario hit a leadoff single and came around to score on sacrifice fly from Smart.
The Penguins and Flames will conclude their four-game Horizon League series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. First pitch has been pushed back an hour from the original start time of noon. Live audio for both games will be available at YSNLive.com.
