Box Score 2 Senior lefthander Collin Floyd threw a two-hit shutout in game one of a doubleheader to help the Youngstown State baseball team earn a split on Saturday at Northern Kentucky.
The Penguins won game one 1-0 behind Floyd's third shutout of the campaign before the Norse bounced back to take game two 7-2.
The only two hits that Floyd allowed came in the first inning, and the senior from Akron, Ohio, did not walk a batter while striking out seven. Following an infield single by Michael Hall with two outs in the first, Floyd retired 13 straight hitters until Josh Romans reached on an error to lead off the sixth. Floyd promptly struck out Sam Hedges then got Griffin Doersching into an inning-ending double play. Floyd shook off a two-out error in the seventh by striking out Jayden Wakeham for his fifth complete game in nine starts in 2021.
While Floyd was in control for the Penguins, NKU's pitchers allowed just four hits in the seven-inning affair.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy got YSU's offense started in the top of the second with a one-out double, and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. O'Shaughnessy then scored the game's only run on Andre Good's sacrifice fly to left.
O'Shaughnessy, Good, Nick Caruso and Jeff Wehler each had hits in game one for the Penguins.
NKU starter Kyle Klingenbeck allowed the run in the second inning and surrendered three hits and five walks before handing the ball to the bullpen with two outs in the fourth. Jon McGee allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief for the Norse.
In game two, NKU never trailed and scored in four of the first six innings to win 7-2. Dominick Bucko doubled and scored, and Wehler hit a solo homer as both players delivered two hits.
The Norse scored an unearned run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first, and Billy Marion singled in Doersching in the third to put NKU up 2-0.
The Penguins cut the deficit in half when Bucko doubled and scored on a rundown during Turner Grau's fielder's choice in the fourth, but Doersching hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run bottom of the fifth for the Norse that made the score 5-1.
Wehler's fifth home run of the season led off the top of the sixth and got the Penguins to within 5-2, but that's as close as they would get. Andrew Bacon hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to put the Norse up 7-2, which ended up being the final score.
YSU starter Nick Perez was charged with five runs, four of which were earned, on four hits and four walks in 4.1 innings in the loss. Chad Coles allowed the two runs in the sixth inning, and Conner Johnson did not allow a run over the final 2.2 innings.
Noah Richardson went the distance for the Norse, striking out eight Penguins hitters while surrendering two earned runs on six hits. The junior southpaw needed just 80 pitches in the complete-game victory.
The Penguins will try to finish the weekend with a series split on Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast live on YSNlive.com.
