Box Score Jack Kraus hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Milwaukee a 12-8 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in the series finale on Sunday at Franklin Field.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Cherokee LeBeau reached on an error and pinch runner Joey Scaffidi moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Winter. After Marcus Cline was intentionally walked, Luke Seidel reached on an infield single to load the bases. After Gary Clift Jr. struck out Jack Cavanaugh for the second out of the inning, Kraus sent a grand slam over the wall in left field to secure a 2-2 series split for Milwaukee.
Youngstown State falls to 16-15 overall and 11-9 in Horizon League play while Milwaukee improves to 12-15 overall and 12-8 in league action.
After falling behind 1-0, the Penguins scored the next seven runs of the game. The Panthers scored three times in the fourth before YSU got a run in the sixth to hold an 8-4 advantage. Milwaukee then plated three in the seventh and one in the eighth to force extra innings.
Turner Grau went 3-for-6 and tied a single-game school record with two triples. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native became just the second Penguin since 1988 to triple two times in a game. He is the first Penguin to record two triples in a game since Drew Dickerson had a pair of three-baggers at Penn State on April 9, 2019. Grau also drove in a run and scored twice.
Lucas Nasonti went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Dominick Bucko and Jeff Wehler each had two hits.
Clift Jr. suffered his second loss of the season after allowing four unearned runs on two hits over a season-high 2.1 innings. Joel Hake was responsible for one run on two hits over one inning of work while Chad Coles surrendered three runs on five hits over 1.1 innings.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed four runs on four hits and struck out a career-high five batters over five innings in a no decision. He recorded a strikeout in four different innings, and he retired the side in order in the second and fifth frames. Perez handed the ball to the bullpen with a 7-4 lead.
The Panthers struck first with one run on one hit in the home half of the first inning. Cavanaugh drew a two-out walk and Kraus followed with an RBI double to right center to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead.
Youngstown State answered with four runs on four hits in the top of the second to grab a 4-1 advantage. Andre Good drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Caruso and scored on an RBI single from Nasonti. Wehler brought home Nasonti with a sacrifice fly before Phillip Glasser hit a two-out double. Bucko and Grau followed with back-to-back RBI singles to give YSU a three-run lead.
The Penguins pushed their lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Caruso, who was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error following an infield single from Nasonti. Wehler then delivered an RBI double down the left field line that plated Nasonti. YSU increased its edge to 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Grau hit a one-out triple to right center and scored on an RBI single by Steven D'Eusanio.
The Panthers responded with three runs on three hits in the home half of the fourth to cut YSU's lead in half. Zach Nogalski and Mitchell Buban hit consecutive singles to begin the inning and Conner Goodman followed with a two-run triple to left center. Goodman was then able to score on a groundout by Mike Ferri to shave the Penguins' edge to 7-4.
Youngstown State expanded its lead to 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning when Grau hit his second triple of the day to left field and scored on a two-out RBI infield single by Braeden O'Shaughnessy.
Milwaukee scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to pull within a run at 8-7. Winter, Cline and Seidel began the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Cavanaugh followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Winter, and Kraus delivered an RBI single up the middle that scored Cline. Hake came out of the bullpen and hit Nogalski with a pitch to load the bases again. Buban was then also hit by a pitch to bring Seidel home for the Panthers' seventh run. Hake proceeded to register two key strikeouts with the bases loaded to preserve a one-run lead.
The Panthers evened the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth when Winter hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cline and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Seidel.
Kraus and Seidel each had three hits to lead the Panthers, and Kraus drove in a game-high six runs.
Milwaukee starter Adam LaRock allowed four runs on four hits over 1.2 innings while Ryan Hoerter was responsible for four runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings of relief. James Severson, Nate DeYoung and AJ Blubaugh combined to hold the Penguins scoreless on four hits over the final 4.2 innings. Blubaugh was awarded his first victory of the season.
Youngstown State will continue Horizon League play next weekend with a four-game series at Northern Kentucky. The Penguins and Norse are scheduled to open the series on Friday with a single game at noon ET.
