Box Score Collin Floyd tossed the first complete game shutout by a Penguin since 2012 to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 3-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday at Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio.
Floyd, the sixth-year senior southpaw, scattered three singles and struck out a season-high eight batters without a walk over a career-high nine scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season. The Akron, Ohio, native tossed YSU's first complete game shutout since Blake Aquadro blanked UIC over nine innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Eastwood Field on April 29, 2012. Before that, the Penguins' last nine-inning complete game shutout came in 2004.
Floyd sat down the Mastodons in order in the second, third, fifth, eighth and ninth innings as he retired the final eight batters he faced. He recorded a strikeout in six different frames, and he had multiple punch outs in two different innings. Floyd faced just three batters over the minimum as he faced only three batters in six of the nine innings he was on the bump. He retired seven straight batters between the first and third innings, and he sat down six conseuctive batters between the fourth and fifth frames. The senior left-hander did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, and he held the Mastodons without a hit in six different stanzas.
Youngstown State won its third straight game to improve to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play. The Penguins are 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2007. Purdue Fort Wayne has now dropped five straight contests to fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league action.
Steven D'Eusanio paced the Penguins offensively by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Phillip Glasser and Jeff Wehler each collected an RBI single and a stolen base while Nick Caruso added a bunt single.
YSU was limited to a season-low five hits as Purdue Fort Wayne starter Cameron Boyd blanked the Penguins over the first five innings. Boyd allowed three runs on four hits and fanned nine batters over seven innings on the mound in a losing effort. He retired YSU in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. Boyd had eight strikeouts through five innings as he retired 11 straight batters at one point. He recorded at least one strikeout in five different frames and he had multiple K's in three innings.
The Penguins broke a scoreless tie with two runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Dominick Bucko drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caruso and advanced to third on a fly out by Lucas Nasonti. Wehler followed with an RBI single to left field to plate Bucko for YSU's first run. After Wehler stole second, Glasser delivered an RBI single to left that pushed YSU's lead to 2-0.
YSU added to its advantage in the top of the seventh when D'Eusanio blasted his second home run of the season to center field to increase the Penguins' edge to 3-0.
Garett Lake, Trenton Stoner and Jack Lang each had base hits for Purdue Fort Wayne.
The Penguins and Mastodons will close out their four-game Horizon League series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon ET. Game one of the doubleheader will be seven innings, and game two is scheduled for nine. No fans will be permitted, but both games will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
