Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team scored seven runs in the fifth inning to build a big lead and held off Wright State late for a 12-10 victory on Friday evening at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins earned their fourth straight win while snapping the Raiders' 12-game winning streak. Youngstown State is now 9-11 overall and 4-5 in Horizon League play while Wright State is 12-6 overall and 12-1 against the conference.
Nick Caruso went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs and a three-run triple in the fifth inning while Phillip Glasser went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Dominick Bucko went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Jeff Wehler was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Turner Grau and Andre Good each recorded two hits as eight different Penguins notched a hit in the contest.
YSU led 11-3 through six innings before Wright State scored six runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to get back into the game at 11-9. Steven D'Eusanio brought in Wehler to give the Penguins an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, and Grau threw out a runner at the plate to end the eighth after Wright State got the margin back to two. Gary Clift Jr. came on in the ninth and retired the Raiders in order to record his fifth save of the season.
Youngstown State outhit the Raiders 17-10, but Wright State benefitted from eight walks.
YSU starter Colin Clark earned his second win of the season by allowing six runs on six hits and striking out three over 6.2 innings. He allowed two runs in the top of the first, then settled down to pitch three straight scoreless innings. The lefthander surrendered a solo homer in the fifth, and he allowed a three-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning. He handed the ball off to the bullpen with an 11-6 lead.
Wright State jumped in front 2-0 with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the first inning. Quincy Hamilton drew a one-out walk and Zane Harris walked with two outs. Sammy Sass and Alec Sayre followed with back-to-back RBI singles up the middle to give the Raiders an early edge.
The Penguins evened the score with a pair of runs on two hits and an error in the home half of the second inning. D'Eusanio reached on an error, Grau doubled down the right field line and Caruso delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
Youngstown State grabbed the lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Grau hit a leadoff double down the right field line and Blaze Glenn followed with an RBI single up the middle. After Glenn stole second, Bucko hit an RBI single of his own up the middle to put YSU ahead 4-2.
The Raiders pulled within a run in the top of the fifth inning when Alex Alders hit a solo home run to left field.
The Penguins pushed their advantage to 11-3 with seven runs on six hits while sending 12 batters to the plate in the home half of the fifth. Glasser led off the inning with a solo home run to right field and Good followed with a single up the middle. After D'Eusanio walked, Grau advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Glenn was intentionally walked to load the bases before Bucko delivered an RBI single up the middle that plated Good. Caruso then delivered a three-run triple down the right field line and Lucas Nasonti followed with an RBI single. Good then notched an RBI single of his own to plate YSU's 11th run.
Wright State got back in the game and cut YSU's lead to 11-9 with six runs in the top of the seventh. The Raiders did all their damage with two outs after Clark induced back-to-back groundouts to begin the inning. Tyler Black hit a three-run home run, Gehrig Anglin hit a two-run single and Alders drove in a run by walking with the bases loaded.
After the Penguins increased their lead to 12-9 with a sacrifice fly from D'Eusanio in the bottom of the seventh, the Raiders got the margin back to two when Sass hit a two-out RBI double to right center in the top of the eighth. Sayre followed with a single to left field, but Grau threw out Sass at the plate to end the inning. Clift Jr. came on in the ninth to record three straight flyouts to end the game.
Wright State starter Jake Schrand took the loss after allowing seven runs, five of them earned, on nine hits and striking out six over four innings. Bradley Deboutte surrendered four runs on four hits in one inning of work while Tristan Haught was responsible for one run on four hits in one inning. Jake Shirk tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Raiders.
Kenny Misik allowed two runs on two walks while Dalton Earich was responsible for one run on one walk and one hit. Chad Coles allowed one run on three hits over 1.1 innings.
