Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Youngstown State baseball team earned wins of 6-4 and 7-1 to sweep a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Saturday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins improved to 7-11 overall and secured their second series win of the season while St. Bonaventure falls to 0-2. YSU has now won its home opener at Eastwood Field in two of the last three seasons.

Game 1 Recap

Collin Floyd struck out a career-high 12 batters over eight innings while Steven D'Eusanio and Jeff Wehler each homered in the Youngstown State baseball team's 6-4 home-opening victory over St. Bonaventure in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins led 6-2 going into the ninth inning before the Bonnies made things interesting in their final at bat. After Dalton Earich struck out Brendyn Stillman to begin the inning, Tyler Kelder, Matthew Williams and Danny Manion drew three straight walks to load the bases. Joel Hake then came out of the bullpen to strike out pinch hitter Jack Putney for the second out of the inning. After a pinch-hit RBI single by Ben Berger scored Kelder, Branden Myers walked with the bases loaded to make it a two-run game. Gary Clift Jr. then came on and got Garrett Boldt to ground out to second base to end the game and earn his fourth save of the season.

Floyd earned his second victory of the season after allowing two runs on five hits over eight innings of work. The Akron, Ohio, native set a new career high with 12 strikeouts while walking only one batter. Floyd recorded a strikeout in six different innings as he struck out the side in the first, fourth and fifth frames. He struck out seven straight batters at one point as he sat down 11 in a row overall between the second and sixth innings.

Phillip Glasser and Dominick Bucko each had two hits to pace the Penguins offensively. Glasser went 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base and two runs scored. D'Eusanio hit a solo home run while Wehler delivered a three-run blast.

St. Bonaventure took an early lead with one run on two hits in the top of the second inning. Kelder led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Manion.

Youngstown State responded immediately in the home half of the second when D'Eusanio hit a solo blast over the wall in left field to even the score at a run apiece. The Penguins took a 2-1 lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth as Glasser hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. YSU added another run in the home half of the sixth inning when Glasser hit a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Padraig O'Shaughnessy.

St. Bonaventure pulled within a run at 3-2 in the top of the seventh when Stillman hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manion.  In bottom half of the inning, Nick Caruso hit a one-out double and Lucas Nasonti followed with a walk. Wehler then belted a three-run home run to left field to push YSU's advantage to 6-2.

Kelder led the Bonnies offensively by going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Manion notched a team-high two RBIs.

St. Bonaventure starter Elijah Baez suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over six innings. Kyle Caringi surrendered three runs on five hits in two innings of relief.

Game 2 Recap

The Youngstown State baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to pull away for a 7-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins scored the final six runs of the game after the contest was tied 1-1 at the seventh-inning stretch.

In the home half of the seventh, Bucko drew a leadoff walk, Caruso reached with a bunt single and Nasonti was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Bucko scored on a wild pitch, Wehler walked to load the bases again. Glasser followed with a two-run single through the right side that plated Caruso and Nasonti. Wehler then scored on a wild pitch and Glasser trotted home on a sacrifice fly by D'Eusanio to give YSU a 6-1 edge. Caruso hit a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single from Nasonti in the bottom of the eighth to produce the final margin.

D'Eusanio hit his second solo home run of the day in bottom of the second inning for the first run of the game. The score remained 1-0 until Myers delivered an RBI double for St. Bonaventure in the top of the seventh to even the score.

Blaze Glenn went 3-for-4 with a double while D'Eusanio was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Glasser was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Caruso went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Four YSU pitchers combined to limit the Bonnies to one run on six hits. Starter Colin Clark allowed two hits and struck out five batters over four innings of work. Nick Perez was responsible for one run on three hits and had three strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Kenny Misik earned his first collegiate victory after working 0.2 scoreless innings while Chad Coles allowed just one hit and fanned three over the final two frames.

St. Bonaventure starter Donovan Moffat surrendered one run on six hits and struck out seven over six strong innings. Tripp Breen allowed six runs on four hits in two innings of relief.

Pierce Hendershot paced the Bonnies offensively, going 2-for-3 with a walk while Myers drove in their only run of the game with an RBI double.

The Penguins and Bonnies will conclude their three-game non-conference series with a single game on Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
