Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team concluded non-league play with a 6-1 victory over Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center of Pittsburgh.
The Penguins (7-5) won for the seventh time in eight dual matches while handing the Dukes (3-1) their first defeat of the season.
YSU won all three doubles contests. Joao Garretto and David Alvarez Moreno won 6-1 at No. 2 while Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran won 7-5 at No. 1 and Asier Ibanez and Laurentiu Mandocescu also won 7-5 at No. 3.
In singles play, Vardakis won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 over Alex Mascioli. At No. 2, Mandocescu defeated Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Gran picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kaipo Marshall at No. 3 singles. Garretto battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win over Tamirlan Teberikov at No. 4. Ibanez earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bode Vance at No. 6.
The Penguins open Horizon League play on March 27-28 when they play host to IUPUI. First serve for both matches at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
