Penguins Fall 6-1 in Series Finale at Wright State

Box Score

Wright State scored the final six runs of the game and got two home runs from Tyler Black as it beat the Youngstown State baseball team 6-1 and finished a weekend sweep on Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Raiders extended their winning streak to eight straight games, and they remained undefeated in Horizon League play with an 8-0 record. YSU dropped its fourth straight decision and fell to 5-11 overall and 3-5 against conference opponents.

Blaze Glenn, Turner Grau, Nick Caruso, Dominck Bucko and Lucas Nasonti each singled in the game for the Penguins, and Padraig O'Shaughnessy reached base on a walk.

Black finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and he provided three of Wright State's eight hits. Six of those hits by the Raiders went for extra bases.

Wright State starter Austin Cline earned the victory after allowing one unearned run on four hits and striking out 11 batters over seven innings. He retired the first five batters he faced, and he sat down nine straight between the second and fifth frames. Cline retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. He recorded at least one strikeout in each of the first five innings and in six different frames overall. In addition, Cline notched multiple punch outs in five different innings.

Mitch Gremling came on in the eighth and allowed one hit over two scoreless innings of work to close out the contest.

YSU starter Jon Snyder suffered the loss after allowing five runs, four of them earned, on four hits over four innings. He retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings. Dalton Earich tossed two scoreless innings while Nathan Ball was responsible for one run on two hits without recording an out. Joel Hake and Gary Clift Jr. each worked a scoreless inning of relief.

The Penguins struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. Grau hit a two-out infield single and moved to second when Caruso reached on an error. Bucko followed with an RBI single to left field that plated Grau to give YSU a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders grabbed a 2-1 advantage with two runs on two hits in the home half of the second. Julian Greenwell led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Damon Dues. Quincy Hamilton followed with a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Sammy Sass.

Wright State pushed its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Black hit a three-run home run. Dues and Hamilton drew back-to-back walks and Black followed with a three-run blast over the wall in right center. In his next at bat in the home half of the seventh, Black delivered a solo shot to right field that increased the Raiders' lead to 6-1.

Youngstown State will step out of Horizon League action next weekend as it welcomes St. Bonaventure to Eastwood Field for a three-game series. The Penguins will host the Bonnies in their home opener on Friday at 5 p.m., and the teams will start a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
