The Youngstown State men's tennis team won five of six singles contests in straight sets to beat Bellarmine 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins (5-4) concluded a perfect 5-0 homestand by beating the Knights (3-10).
YSU dropped two of three doubles contests, but roared back in singles play. The Guins won easily at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, clinching the contest with a win by Laurentiu Mandocescu.
At No. 4, Joao Garretto won 6-2, 6-1 over Sam Rueff, at No. 5, David Alvarez Moreno beat Eli Franks in impressive fashing 6-0, 6-0. In action at No. 6 singles, Asier Pena Ibanez beat Michael Staff, 6-1, 6-2 and then Mandocescu clinched the contest with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emil Berglund. At No. 3, Erik Gran won a pair of tiebreakers to knock off Paul Reynolds in the final contest of the match. At No. 1, Vasilis Vardakis dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 contest to Cole Groetsch.
Vardakis and Gran earned the Penguins' lone doubles win, earning a 6-4 triumph at No. 1.
The Penguins return to action on March 6 when they visits Butler. First serve against the Bullgods is set for 11 a.m.
