Penguins Close Out Louisiana Trip with 7-4 Win at Nicholls

Box Score

The Youngstown State baseball team recorded season highs with seven runs and 13 hits on its way to a 7-4 victory over Nicholls on Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.

Seven different Penguins collected at least one hit in the contest. Jeff Wehler tied his career high with three hits while driving in a run, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Turner Grau matched his season and career high with three hits including his first-career triple. Andre Good doubled and drove in a season-high three runs while Blaze Glenn went 2-for-4 with his first-career triple and a run scored.

Youngstown State improved to 2-6 and snapped a three-game losing streak with the win while Nicholls dropped to 2-4.

YSU starter Jon Snyder allowed three runs, two of them earned, on five hits and struck out a career-high eight batters while walking four over 4.1 innings. The junior right-hander recorded at least one strikeout in five different frames while notching multiple punch outs in the first and third innings.

Five Penguins relievers combined to hold the Colonels to one unearned run on two hits over the final 4.2 innings. Nathan Ball earned his first collegiate victory after working 0.2 scoreless innings while Travis Perry allowed an unearned run over two innings. Andrew Russell allowed one hit over a third of an inning, and Kenny Misik tossed 0.2 scoreless innings. Gary Clift Jr. earned his second save of the season after working a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Penguins were able to grab an early edge with two runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Trey Law hit a leadoff single through the left side and Wehler followed with a bunt single. After Phillip Glasser moved the runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt, Good sent a double down the left field line that plated Law and Wehler to put YSU ahead 2-0.

The Colonels got their first run on the board in the home half of the third when Basiel Williams hit a solo home run to left field. Nicholls tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Austin Cain drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a throwing error by Glasser.

Youngstown State jumped back in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Law drew and leadoff walk and moved to third on a single up the middle by Wehler. After Wehler stole second base, Glasser delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Law. Good followed with a sacrifice fly of his own that plated Wehler to give the Penguins a 4-2 lead.

The Colonels shaved YSU's lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Xane Washington. Williams drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a single by Dane Simon and scored on Washington's ground ball to third base.

The Penguins extended their lead to 7-3 with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Glenn and Grau hit back-to-back triples to begin the rally before Dominick Bucko drove in Grau with a sacrifice fly to right field. Nick Caruso followed with a double to right field, and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Law. Wehler then singled to shortstop and an ensuring error allowed Caruso to score YSU's seventh and final run of the contest.

Nicholls scored its fourth run in the home half of the sixth to pull within three runs. Wes Toups and Greg Anderberg drew back-to-back two-out walks, and Toups was able to score on an error by Grau in left field to cut YSU's advantage to 7-4.

The Colonels threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning by getting a pair of runners on base with one out. Parker Coddou hit a one-out single and Mason Turner followed with a walk. Misik came on in relief of Russell and got Toups to pop out and Anderberg to strike out swinging to avoid any damage.

Nicholls starter Nick Heckman took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over five innings. Beau Balado was responsible for one run on one hit over 0.2 innings. Cade Evans, Peter Holland and Nico Saltaformaggio combined to hold the Penguins scoreless on four hits over the final 3.1 innings.

Coddou and Simon paced the Colonels offensively as each recorded a pair of hits.

Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play with a four-game series at league newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne on March 5-7. The Penguins and Mastodons will begin their series on Friday with a single game at 3 p.m. ET.
