Box Score Colin Clark recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and Jeff Wehler hit his first home run of the season as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 6-2 to No. 11 LSU on Friday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Clark allowed five runs on seven hits and did not walk a batter over a season-high six innings in his second start of the season. The senior left-hander recorded at least one strikeout in each of the six innings he was on the mound. The Tigers scored all six of their runs on four home runs.
Youngstown State dropped to 1-5 on the season with the loss while LSU improved to 4-1 with the victory.
Andre Good went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Wehler hit a solo home run and Blaze Glenn notched an RBI single. Phillip Glasser and Turner Grau also had base hits for the Penguins.
LSU starter Jaden Hill allowed only one hit while facing one batter over the minimum in six scoreless innings of work. He struck out four batters and retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and sixth frames. Hill permitted just two base runners, and he did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth as he earned his second win of the season.
Gavin Dugas paced LSU offensively by going 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. Cade Beloso and Cade Doughty each belted a two-run home run while Zach Arnold added a solo shot.
The Tigers grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tre' Morgan hit a one-out single and Beloso followed with a two-out, two-run home run to right field. LSU extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Morgan reached with a two-out single and Doughty followed with a two-run blast to left field. The Tigers went ahead 5-0 in the home half of the fourth on a solo home run to left center by Dugas.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Glenn. Good reached on a one-out single up the middle before Glenn also sent one back up the middle allowing Good to score.
LSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Arnold sent a solo home run to left center.
Youngstown State scored its second run in the top of the ninth when Wehler hit a solo home run, his first of the season, to left field. The Penguins got runners to second and third with one out as Glasser singled and Good sent a double down the left field line. However, LSU closer Drew Fontenot came in and retired the only two batters he faced to end the game and pick up his first save of the campaign.
Clark suffered his second loss of the season while Dalton Earich allowed one run on four hits over two innings of relief.
LSU's Brandon Kaminer surrendered one run on two hits over one inning of relief while Blake Money was responsible for one run on three hits over 1.1 innings of work.
The Penguins and Tigers will play again on Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium with first pitch set for 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com and SEC Network+.
