Box Score 2 The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Troy on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The Penguins fell 8-2 in game one before dropping game two by a final of 13-6.
YSU falls to 0-3 on the season while Troy improves to 3-0. The Trojans won game one of the four-game series 10-4 on Friday night.
Game 1 Recap
Youngstown State dropped game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Troy by a final of 8-2.
The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Turner Grau in the top of the second inning, but the Trojans scored eight times over their final six plate appearances to take a 2-0 series lead.
Troy outhit Youngstown State 11-8, and YSU left a total of 12 runners on base. Phillip Glasser and Jeff Wehler each had two hits to pace the Penguins offensively.
Grau got the scoring started by hitting his first-career home run to center field on a 1-1 pitch in the top of the second inning.
After being held scoreless over the first two innings, the Trojans took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Drew Frederic delivered a three-run home run to right center field. Troy used the long ball again in the bottom of the fifth when Clay Stearns hit a solo shot to left field.
The Penguins cut the Trojans' advantage to 4-2 in the top of the sixth when Braeden O'Shaughnessy's sacrifice fly plated Dominick Bucko. However, YSU would get no closer as Troy scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh to pull away.
The Trojans' fifth run came when Reed Smith plated Kyle Mock with a sacrifice bunt, and their sixth run came on an RBI single by Stearns. Troy's final two runs of the game came on an RBI groundout by William Sullivan and an RBI single from Nic Nolan.
Frederic led the Trojans offensively, going 4-for-5 with a game-high three RBIs and two runs scored. Nolan went 3-for-3 with a double while Stearns was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice.
Troy starter Garrett Gainous allowed just one run on three hits and fanned five batters over five innings to earn the victory. Max Newton surrendered one run on four hits over 1.2 innings of relief, and Marquez Oates was awarded the save after striking out five over 2.1 scoreless innings.
YSU starter Collin Floyd took the loss after allowing six runs, five of them earned, on seven hits and striking out four over 5.2 innings. Joel Hake was responsible for one run on two hits over a third of an inning while Chad Coles surrendered a run on one hit and two walks in one inning of work. Andrew Russell worked a scoreless eighth inning in his first appearance as a Penguin.
Game 2 Recap
Blaze Glenn went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs as Youngstown State fell 13-6 to Troy in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Riddle-Pace Field.
Steven D'Eusanio also went yard in the contest, and he added a team-high three RBIs. Dylan Swarmer went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles while Wehler, Andre Good and Trey Law also had hits for the Penguins. Law went 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored in his first collegiate action.
Troy's Logan Cerny went 5-for-5 with three home runs, two doubles, three runs scored and seven RBIs. Dalton Sinquefield and Easton Kirk also went deep for the Trojans in a game that featured a total of seven home runs. Sinquefield had three RBIs and scored three times while Kirk drove in a pair of runs.
Troy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Cerny hit a two-run blast and Kirk followed with a solo shot. YSU got on the board in the top of the third when Wehler scored on a wild pitch after reaching with a two-out double.
The Trojans got the run back in the home half of the third on an RBI double to center field by Cerny. Troy then extended its lead by scoring six times in the bottom of the fourth. Nolan hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Rigsby Mosley. Later in the inning, Sinquefield hit a three-run homer to right field and Cerny hit his second blast of the day, this one a two-run shot, to put Troy ahead 10-1.
The Penguins plated their second run in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homer to left center by Glenn. However, the Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to push their advantage to 12-2. Cerny hit an RBI double down the left field line, and Kirk followed with a sacrifice fly that drove home Brady Sherrill.
Youngstown State climbed within 12-4 in the top of the eighth inning when Good hit a leadoff single and D'Eusanio followed with a two-run home run to right field. Troy's 13th and final run came on Cerny's third homer of the contest, this one a solo shot to right field, that made it 13-4.
YSU continued to battle in the top of the ninth as it scored twice on one hit and four walks. Law led off with a single and Glasser and Wehler each drew one-out walks to load the bases. After a fly out by Good, D'Eusanio and Glenn drew back-to-back two-out walks that scored Law and Glasser, respectively.
YSU starter Travis Perry was saddled with the loss after allowing 10 runs on 12 hits and striking out three over 3.2 innings. Nick Perez was responsible for three runs, only one of them earned, on two hits over 4.1 innings in his first collegiate appearance.
Troy starter Bay Witcher earned the victory after allowing two runs on six hits and fanning five batters over six innings of work. Ryan Pettys surrendered two runs and struck out three over two innings of relief, and Tyson Ellis allowed a pair of runs in the ninth while issuing four walks.
