Penguins Get Three Homers to Beat Niagara 11-5

Box Score

The Youngstown State baseball team got home runs from three different players and scored the final six runs of the game to beat Niagara 11-5 game one of a split doubleheader on Tuesday at Eastwood Field.

YSU scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and it never trailed in the contest despite the Purple Eagles rallying to tie the score at 5-5 in the top of the fifth.

Trey Bridis led off the bottom of the first with a home run on the second pitch he saw for the Penguins' first home run of the game. Jeff Wehler followed with a double, and he scored after stealing third and racing home on a wild pitch. Blaze Glenn then cleared the second wall in left on a no-doubt home run that made the score 3-0.

Niagara's first hit of the game was a two-out, two-run single by Peter Battaglia with the bases loaded in the top of the third, and it got the Purple Eagles within a run at 3-2.

Wehler walked and scored on a wild pitch in the third, and the lead grew to three runs again in the fourth when Lucas Nasonti doubled and scored on Bridis' RBI single.

Battaglia hit a two-run double as part of a three-run top of the fifth for Niagara that tied the score at 5-5, but YSU went on to score the final six runs of the contest. Nick LaBrasca's first career home run came in the bottom of the fifth and gave the Penguins a 7-5 lead, and Web Charles' sacrifice fly in the sixth pushed the margin back to three at 8-5. Glenn, Austin Trace and Bridis each had RBIs in YSU's three-run seventh.

Bridis finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, and Glenn and LaBrasca drove in a pair of runs.

Reliever Dalton Earich was awarded the win after holding the Purple Eagles scoreless over 1.2 innings. He, Jakob Brustoski and Zack Minney combined to blank Niagara over the final four innings.

Youngstown State will host Bowling Green later Tuesday evening at 6.
